country-music outsider,
talks about country mu-
sic, he doesn’t mean the
pop stars masquerading as country
musicians.
“When I say country music, I mean
Merle Haggard,” Keen told The State
in 2009.
Haggard, who was part of the coun-
try outlaw movement in the ’60s and
’70s, will perform at the Township Au-
ditorium tonight. So what is country
music to Haggard?
“It’s been my life for half a century,”
he said. “That about sums it up.”
Haggard and his band The Strangers
helped push the Bakersfield sound in-
to the mainstream in the ’60s. It was a
twangy subgenre of country music
played in California honky tonk bars
by Buck Owens and the Buckaroos,
among others. The music was a reac-
tion to the glossy music coming out of

common? Aside from being on
the other side of the world, they are all
cultures with a significant place in the his-
tory and culture of Anderson County .
Since 2006, the Anderson International
Festival has made it its mission to high-
light those varying cultures and showcas-
ing their impact on Anderson County The .
first year, it was Russia, followed two years
later by the Celtic culture and, in 2010,
West Africa.
This year, for the fourth installment of
the event, the AIF board voted for France,
and they have filled January and February
with events that feature much that makes
France great.
“We always try to focus on a country that
has some history somewhere in Ander-
son,” said Beverly Childs, president of the

“It’s been my life for half a century,”
