Implications for teaching and learning of the changes to the 14-19 curriculum Support own views with reading around this topic Damien Puljic
in which all young people will be required to continue in education or training until they are 18 by 2015, to thank our stakeholders for their continued support of RPA and to raise greater local awareness of RPA. School sixth forms will be the responsibility of the home LA; Sixth Form Colleges, will be the responsibility of the home LA will supported by guidance issued by the YPLA; Academies will be the responsibility of the YPLA acting on behalf of the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families; FE colleges will be the responsibility of the SFA; Providers of Apprenticeships will be the responsibility of SFA, working on behalf of NAS.
Future changes to the curriculum A choice of routes for 14-19 year olds GCSEs, Diplomas, Apprenticeships, foundation learning To be able to cater for a variety of learning styles Traditional theoretical or a combination of practical and theory through the use of degree Implement the diploma (this will be the main focus) For those wanting to continue into higher education (school-college-university) and/or skilled employment Change of a-levels to reduce burden, huge amounts of testing and stressing through vast amounts of assessment and introduce a method of “stretch and challenge” Up-to-date GCSEs; a controlled assessment foundation learning tier, as a platform for higher education New core subjects will be introduced English, Maths and ICT. These are considered essential for prospective students to succeed in life and future employment Will be relabelled as “functional skills” Personal, learning and thinking of young people will develop secondary curriculum with more time to focus on basics for those that need more challenges
New Educational Reform GCSE content will be more up to date Great for lower achievers through a concept called a foundation tier – this will provide the next step to higher achievement Students can apply subjects to real world work-related scenarios. Subjects will now have case studies and context. A new and fresh approach compared with traditional learning Real world skills will enhance students and employability through; independent enquiry, self-management, reflective learning, effective participation, creative thinking. Focus on basics as well as challenging those who are more capable Embeds a variety of assessments into the new education system Narrows the gap between students with a disadvantaged background and those that are fortunate http://jameswoodward.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/tate_modern.jpg [Accessed 27/04/10]
Education and Training route map http://www.dcsf.gov.uk/14-19/documents/qualifications_map.JPG [accessed 26/04/10]
Education and Training routes The new route map will have a number of stop-gaps for options and routes for students Foundation levels appear twice Added options of; diplomas, apprenticeships, further education or employment with training
Interesting Facts “ By 2020 there will be 2.5 million fewer low skilled jobs in comparison with today Over 40% jobs will require a graduate level qualification Today's learners will have more than 10 jobs by the age of 38 We are essentially preparing students for jobs that don’t yet exist” The majority of people have a facebook account or have heard of this new social tool This is the new information age
Why the need for change? A changing society A foundation for life Greater choice of career To raise achievement rates The traditional-based education system is floored it only advantages the traditional ‘theory-based’ learner There is a drive towards education and it’s real application The old system does not account for practical-based learners Future proof the younger generation’s careers
New system benefits Greater career advice for students Greater subject relevancy Greater diversity of subjects for teachers and raises interest Greater application of life to subjects Greater career advice for students Greater subject relevancy
Society Evolving The world is a changing place especially with the way the younger generation interact socially; with the rise of multi-million pound facebook, twitter, businesses are now targeting these as marketing tools We require a focus and a need to stay within the loop of technology and teach the younger generations to use ICT responsibly We can make younger generations more employable by adding ICT as a core/functional subjects
Business and work life Businesses are changing as a result of this explosive use of ICT and is an essential part of everyday life For education relies more heavily on the application of ICT for submitting assignments, research and collaboration ICT as a service has many implications from IT Helpdesks to small café bars offering a communications option for passers by Microsoft and windows both play an important role in deciding the future for communication and work. The younger generations will ultimately shape the way Microsoft and Apple are run and the surrounding world ICT makes our world more efficient
In conclusion… Enables practical based and theory based learning to be combined New ‘functional skills’ will prepare pupils with fundamental life skills Enables a pupil’s education to be future proofed by means of ICT (essential for today’s communication and new technologies) Increases chances of employability and lessens social exclusion New system is beneficial for a larger audience; catering for the traditional theory based learner but also practical-minded individuals through the use of diploma
Ultimately… The new reform will have a diverse education portfolio giving students greater choice Great for both high achievers and practical based learners with an offering of ‘functional’ life skills. These skills can be harnessed through further study, social and work based scenarios Being able to apply real-world case studies to subjects. GCSEs are now up to date and more relevant A new A* grade in A-Levels will identify high achievers http://www.cufflinks2wear.com/images/high_achiever_final.jpg [Accessed 27/04/10]
New Education Routes New and relevant GCSEs Functional Apprenticeships Diplomas Preparing students for higher skilled jobs in the future
