The Prophecy – Daniel 9:24-27 “Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy.“Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to return and build up Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a wall, but in times of trouble. After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed. He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering ,and on the temple shall be the abomination of desolations and at the end of time an end shall be put to the desolation.” (ending from Septuagint Version)

A KNOWN Starting POINT - The coming of the Anointed One Dan. 9:25 “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power” (at His baptism) Acts 10:38 Luke 3:1 “In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness...v21 Jesus was baptized too.” In AD 12, the powers held by Tiberius were made equal, rather than second, to Augustus’s own powers, he was a “co-princeps” with Augustus- 12 AD was the start of his reign – 26 AD was the 15th year of the reign of Tiberius – the time Jesus was anointed. 26 AD Jesus Anointed (15th year of Tiberius) Note: 15th year of reign means 14 years. 12 AD + 14 = 26AD

CALCULATING START DATE “From the time the word goes out to return and build up Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’” 457 BC -7th year of Artaxerxes -Decree to return and build up • Subtracting from the date of anointing of Jesus gives the start date • 26 AD minus 62 ‘7’s (434 yrs) = 408 BC (note there is no adjustment for passing year zero) • 408 BC minus 7 ‘7’s (49 years) = 457 BC 457 BC was the year Ezra went to Jerusalem - the 7th year of Artaxerxes (see Ezra 7:7) So 457 BC is the starting date for the 70 week prophecy.

(Neh:13:6) This is the closest date to 408 BC recorded in Old Testament. - 7. 30 AD – ‘Put to Death’ “The Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing... He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven’ (start of his ministry 26 AD) In the middle of the ‘seven’ (30 AD) he will put an end to sacrifice and offering” 3.5 years after Jesus was anointed he died in the middle of the 7 as prophesied and put an end to sacrifice and offering. 30 AD Jesus put to death End of Sacrifices
- 8. The Last 3.5 Years What of the final 3.5 years of the 70 weeks prophecy? As with Daniel’s image prophecy there is a gap from the time of the Death of Christ until the time when the Jews are back in their land in the days of the ‘ten toe kingdoms’ (Dan. 2:44) – a jump from the Romans to the 10 Arab rulers of the last days in Psalm 83. The last 3.5 years is the ‘time times and half a time’– the time of ‘Jacob’s trouble (Dan. 12:1) “It will be for a time, times and half a time. When the power of the holy people has been finally broken, all these things will be completed.”Dan 12:7 Time of trouble GAP
- 9. The Conclusion Just as 7 times passed over Nebuchadnezzar until he knew that God Most High rules in the Kingdoms of men - In the same manner 70 x7 will pass over Israel and the entire world until they know that God rules and will bring in everlasting righteousness
