David’s Change of
Command Ceremony
Text: 1Chr 28:10
Intro:
1Chr 23:1
1 So when David was old and full of days, he made
Solomon his son king over Israel.
In Chapter 23-27, David meets with the appropriate
leadership, to instruct and transfer authority to his son,
Solomon.
In Chapter 28-29, he has a formal, public change of
command ceremony.
1Chr 28:10 is a key statement in this address-
Take heed now;
for the LORD hath chosen thee
to build an house for the sanctuary:
be strong,

and do it.
I. Reproof- Take heed now…
1Chr 28:9
9 And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of
thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and
with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all
hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the
thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee;
but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for
ever.
David offering advice from experience.
Ps 139:1-3 1 O LORD, thou hast searched me, and
known me.
2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising,
thou understandest my thought afar off.
3 Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and
art acquainted with all my ways.
Each generation is intended to build on the last;
not lay a new foundation and start the building
from scratch.

1Cor 3:10 According to the grace of God which is
given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the
foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let
every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.
Col 4:17 And say to Archippus, Take heed to the
ministry which thou hast received in the Lord,
that thou fulfil it.
1Tim 4:16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the
doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou
shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
Titus 2:15 These things speak, and exhort, and
rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise
thee.

Take heed now;
be strong,
and do it.
II. Requirement- …be strong…

1Chr 28:8 Now therefore in the sight of all Israel
the congregation of the LORD, and in the audience
of our God, keep and seek for all the commandments
of the LORD your God: that ye may possess this good
land, and leave it for an inheritance for your children
after you for ever.
1Chr 28:1-2 1 And David assembled all the princes
of Israel, the princes of the tribes, and the captains of
the companies that ministered to the king by course,
and the captains over the thousands, and captains
over the hundreds, and the stewards over all the
substance and possession of the king, and of his sons,
with the officers, and with the mighty men, and with
all the valiant men, unto Jerusalem.
2 Then David the king stood up upon his feet, and
said, Hear me, my brethren, and my people: As for me,
I had in mine heart to build an house of rest for the
ark of the covenant of the LORD, and for the footstool
of our God, and had made ready for the building:
An effort at his age.
1Kgs 1:1 Now king David was old and
stricken in years; and they covered him with
clothes, but he gat no heat.

Ps 71:15-16 15 My mouth shall shew forth thy
righteousness and thy salvation all the day; for I
know not the numbers thereof.
16 I will go in the strength of the Lord GOD: I
will make mention of thy righteousness, even of
thine only.
Matt 5:14-16 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city
that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a
bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto
all that are in the house.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may
see your good works, and glorify your Father which is
in heaven.
Phil 2:15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the
sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a
crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye
shine as lights in the world;

Take heed now;

be strong,
and do it.
III. Repetition- …and do it.
Jacob at the age of 147 and in poor health, no
doubt doesn’t feel strong.
Gen 48:2-3 2 And one told Jacob, and said, Behold,
thy son Joseph cometh unto thee: and Israel
strengthened himself, and sat upon the bed.
3 And Jacob said unto Joseph, God Almighty
appeared unto me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and
blessed me,
God doesn’t waste a position it is his pleasure to
give you a job to do.
1Chr 28:4 Howbeit the LORD God of Israel chose me
before all the house of my father to be king over
Israel for ever: for he hath chosen Judah to be the
ruler; and of the house of Judah, the house of my
father; and among the sons of my father he liked me
to make me king over all Israel:
Motivation to continue what David could not
finish.

1Chr 28:2 Then David the king stood up upon his
feet, and said, Hear me, my brethren, and my people:
As for me, I had in mine heart to build an house of
rest for the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and for
the footstool of our God, and had made ready for the
building:
Man, never gets so wise he doesn’t need God to
instruct him.
1Chr 28:7 Moreover I will establish his kingdom for
ever, if he be constant to do my commandments
and my judgments, as at this day.
Conclusion: your change of command
ceremony-
John 9:5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the
world.
1Thess 5:5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children
of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep

through thine own name those whom thou hast given me,
that they may be one, as we are.
John 17:17-19 17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy
word is truth.
18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I
also sent them into the world.
19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also
might be sanctified through the truth.
John 21:17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son
of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he
said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said
unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that
I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
John 21:19 This spake he, signifying by what death he
should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith
unto him, Follow me.
