John Allan @mrpottz 2018 Data-Driven Learning Activity: Pre-reading identify word meanings with a text visualization Purpose: to study vocabulary before a reading task Outcomes: Pre-reading activity to identify key words and become familiar with words in a reading with a word visualization Try it 1. Locate a digital copy of a reading 2. Copy the text (usually your teacher will provide this) 3. Open Wordsift (https://wordsift.org) 4. Paste the copied text into the Text area of WordSift 5. Click on the SIFT button 6. A word cloud appears 7. Choose the Cloud Settings button 8. Change the Maximum number of words to the number that the teacher provides (example: 12) 9. Press the ENTER key

Note that the key word is in the centre of this visualization 14. Use the words around the key word to think of a definition 15. Write down your definitions for each key word 16. Repeat this for all of the words in the word cloud
