Dear Educator,
Welcome to Eating is a Lifestyle...For Kids! The journey on which you are about to embark is an
important one. As a leader in this endeavor, you have the opportunity to assist young people,
along with their families, in navigating the rugged terrain that is today’s food industry. More than
ever, common sense and education on healthy eating basics are muddled by marketing
gimmicks and propagation of processed food. You have the potential to promote change and
truly make a difference!
Over this 10-week course, you will be sharing important information about how simple it can be
for families to eat healthfully. This activity-based program is designed for children ages 8-13,
with lessons directed toward the students. However, parents also play a critical role in guiding
their children toward healthy choices. Each section contains a “Parent Responsibility”
component, along with a tip sheet from choosemyplate.gov for more ideas on how to implement
the lessons at home. Recipes from FoodHero.org are included as an opportunity for families to
apply the new information they learn from the cooking tutorials contained in this course.
Each 45-minute session also includes:
● A nutritious snack to reinforce the message of the week
● An activity to inspire students to get up and moving, or discussing with their parents
● A chance to set a goal for the coming week on “My Food Record”
Because minimal materials are required, and includes an Outcome Measures Tool, this
curriculum is easy to implement in a variety of settings, from schools to hospitals.
Thank you for being a guide and a mentor, instilling change in the lives of young people and
their families. May this experience be rewarding for both you and those you teach!
