Causes of World War I
WWI:  July 1914 ~ 11/11/1918 Some Basic Facts 32 Nations involved in “The Great War” WWI started in Europe and most battles occurred there U.S. was NEUTRAL until 1917.
Why did it happen? Four  MAIN  long-term causes M  ilitarism A  lliance System I  mperialism N  ationalism Trigger event: assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
DEF: Belief that your nation is superior to other nations  National interests are more important than global cooperation 1.   Nationalism
1.   Nationalism Grew in  Europe  during the 1800s, causing hostilities between countries
1.   Nationalism France & Germany fought over territory
1.   Nationalism Serbia was independent, but many ethnic Serbs lived in Austria-Hungary Russia saw itself as the protector of East European peoples & competed with Austria-Hungary for influence over Serbs
