- 2. The cover of XXL has a deep meaning behind it. This trio of rappers are all related to each other because Dr Dre helped make the careers of Eminem and 50 Cent. Dr Dre is standing right at the back While Eminem is between Dre and 50 Cent. 50 Cent is right at the front. This shows the order of which rapper came first as Dre came first and 50 Cent came last. The background nightclub looking background represents all 3’s origins on the streets and their affiliation with Gangsta Rap. Their outfits also show them as urban gangsters, which further shows their affiliation with Gangsta Rap. Their names are put in the subhead from left to right like them so the reader knows who is who. The tagline also applies to this as well. Eminem has money, 50 Cent has power and Dr Dre has respect. The magazine has a pull and plug as it has a free 50 Cent DVD in it. This probably for people to get introduced to 50 Cent as he is the newest and most relevant out of the trio. The pug of the magazine is overtaken by the pull and plug and the masthead. The Masthead is partially covered by Eminem's head. This implies that this magazine is well known. The lighting used here is low key as the light only shows The three rappers and the background barely and has quite a lot of shadows present on it.
- 3. This image shows Dr Dre standing with a serious face and posture. The biggest detail on this picture is the shadow behind him. This represents his importance and significance as he has been responsible for some of the greatest rap music of all time, from his own music in NWA and solo songs to helping various other rap artist, like snoop dogg, 2pac, Eminem, 50 Cent and Kendrick Lamar. The way he is dressed is very business like, with black clothing and an expensive looking wristwatch The pull quote used here is Dr Dre saying that he likes to make records, and that’s why he makes music. This sums up his role as a producer and the launcher of peoples rap careers The A side can mean the musical tempo that is very well known or it could mean A listers as in big moneymakers and famous celebrities. the contents page shows the main articles but not all articles It is hard to find out the lighting in this shot as it is set in black and white. It must be low key however as it must be enough to show Dre clear enough while being able to project a shadow. The font used are colors that blend in with grey. The text color is white while the numbers are black
- 4. This text layout is different compared to other over 18 dps’ in other magazines. This is primarily because it is setup as a Q&A instead of all text. Usually, a Q&A is used in magazines for younger audiences with various sub images used to keep their interest as younger audiences tend to ignore lots of text. In this dps, there is no sub images included but a lot of text. It is clear that the magazine editors have a lot of faith in their audience to read this since a Q&A format is used for younger people. The picture of Dr Dre once again shows him looking like a business man than a rapper. This is because of his record label being the largest label in the rap business and being responsible for producing huge albums for other artists. The pull quote used here “good things come to those who wait” can be attributed to dr dre long delayed album, Detox, which fans have been waiting for since 1999, which at the time was finally finished. It also tells what the dps is about, which is interviewing Dr Dre about his latest album.
