Networking of Computers
Introduction
• Computer networks Meaning :
Interconnected Collection of Autonomous Computers
• A Network is a group of devices connected with one another.
Example: Cable Network, Telephone Network
• A computer network consists of two or more computers that are linked in
order to share resources such as printers, exchange files and allow
communication.
• The Internet is an example of a computer network that spreads all across the
world.

NEED FOR COMPUTER NETWORKS
• Resource Sharing:
• All computers in a network can share resources such as printers, fax
machines, modems and scanners.
• File Sharing and Remote Database Access:
• A computer network allows sharing of files and access to remote
database.
• Ease of Communication:
• Computer networks allow people to communicate through emails and
instant messaging facilities.
Computer Network
• Wired Network ---> Ex: Telephone System
• Wireless Network ---> Ex: Cellular Network (Mobile Phone
System)
Types of Networking
The following are the types of
networks based on the geographical
area covered or scale of the network.
– Personal Area Network (PAN)
– Local Area Network (LAN)
– Metropolitian Area Network (MAN)
– Wide Area Network (WAN)
Personal Area Network (PAN)
My Personal Area Network
• The smallest computer network.
• Personal devices may be connected through Bluetooth or
other infra-red enabled devices.
• It has a connectivity range of upto 10 metres.
Local Area Network (LAN)
• It is a computer network that
interconnects computers within a
limited area such as a office,
school, laboratory, ...
• It is inexpensive.
• Transfer of data is fast.
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
MAN is a computer
network that connects
computers within a town,
city or multiple cities.
A MAN is made up of
interconnected LANs.
Wide Area Network(WAN)
• WAN covers a large
geographical area such as
country or continent.
• A WAN is made up of
interconnected MANs.
• The examples of WAN are
Internet connections and
cellular phone
connections.
MAN
RECAPS
• When two or more computers are connected with each other
through a cable and they share their data and information.
This connection is known as networking.
• Internet is an example of Computer Network.
• Advantanges of Computer Network :
• Information Sharing
• Resource Sharing
• Wired and Wireless networking are available to use.
• Computer networks can be categorized depending on its
size and number of devices used.
