Complete the assignment and submit your work to the Dropbox.
Your task is to complete a template for each of five countries.
Upon completion of these templates you will answer a series of
questions to help you formulate a one-page written analysis.
The countries that have been selected are:
In North America: Canada
In South America: Bolivia
In Europe: Czech Republic
In Africa: Uganda
In Asia: Nepal
Part A
Complete a Page Template for each of the Five countries
1. To create ONE Population Pyramid for each of the five
selected countries for the current year go to this site.
mationGateway.php )
Save a Copy of each population pyramid and import it into the
space provided in the top section of the template.
2. What is the dependency load for each of these five countries?
Answer the question related to the percentage of the population
below 15 years of age and over 65 years of age. Add the figures
together for these age groups in order to calculate the answers.
3. Go to this site
(http://www.census.gov/population/international/data/idb/infor
mationGateway.php ) to get information about the Growth Rate
and Natural Increase rates for each country:
Remember that Natural Increase = Birth Rate - Death Rate
Place the information on the template in the space provided for
each country.
4. Calculate the number of years it will take each of these
countries to double their populations by finding the growth
ratefigure for each of the five countries. Remember the formula
is:
The Rule of 70
Doubling Time= Growth Rate divided by 70
5. What are the Fertility Rates for each of the five countries?
Go to
this site, (http://www.census.gov/population/international/data/i
db/informationGateway.php) select Total Fertility Rate
6. In what stage of the Demographic Transition is each of these
countries?
Insert this information on the template.
(Hint: You may want to refer back to activity 7 on Demographic
Transition)
7. Go to
this site (http://www.census.gov/population/international/data/i
db/informationGateway.php) to find the information needed
regarding Life Expectancy
What is the most current Life Expectancy for each of these
countries?
What is the most current HDI ranking for each of these
countries?
Insert the information on the template.
8. Complete all the remaining spaces (questions) on the
template
At this stage you have now finished your research and
completed the template.
Part B
Reminder: Keep in mind your objective:
In your written analysis indicate which country is most like
Canada with respect to the trends in population growth? Which
is least like Canada?
With all this compiled data from the templates you can now put
together your analysis:
Your final submission includes a one page write-up comparative
analysis (FOCUS) by answering the following questions
Step 1:
Write an opening sentence to introduce your comparative study
of Canada and these representative nations in the world.
Step 2:
F State one fact about the population trends in these
countries.
Step 3:
O Give one opinion about population growth and the future
concerns of these countries. Which of the great theorists best
exemplifies your opinion on the population issue?
Step 4:
C Offer one choice that can be made to change the
population trends in these countries.
Step 5:
U Choose which country has the most urgent problem or
need with respect to the population issue and write a sentence or
two to explain your choice.
Step 6:
S Write a statement that synthesizes the information and
propose a viable solution to the population control issue from
outside of the material you studied in this unit. Hint: Perhaps
you can revisit the other issues brought forth in the discussion
board that may provide a solution for the people on the planet.
Part C
Now transfer these responses onto the FOCUS Template. Make
any additions or changes you wish before submitting your
work.
Bonus: What do the four countries outside of Canada have in
common?
Answer: Landlocked countries and in some cases resource poor
nations were used to underscore the difficulty they will have to
deal with the human pressures brought on by demographic
trends.
Assignment Checklist
Before you submit your assignment go through this checklist
and make sure that you have completed all of the required
components.
1. Did you transfer data from the websites accurately?
2. Did you complete all parts of the template for each country?
3. Did you follow all six steps for your analysis?
4. Did you combine the six steps of the FOCUS analysis onto
the FOCUS template?
