Significance Level (α):
It denotes the probability of rejecting the null hypothesis when it is true. It is typically set before
conducting the test, commonly at 0.05 or 0.01 representing the level of significance at which the results are
considered statistically significant. A lower alpha value indicates a more stringent criterion for rejecting the
null hypothesis
Test Statistic:
It is a numerical value calculated from sample data that is used to determine whether to reject the null
hypothesis. The choice of the test statistic depends on the type of hypothesis test being performed and the
nature of the data. For example, t-test, z-test, F-test, chi-square test statistics are commonly used in various
hypothesis tests.
Components of Hypothesis Testing
P-value:
It is the probability of obtaining a test statistic as extreme as, or more extreme than, the one observed in the
sample data, assuming that the null hypothesis is true. A smaller p-value indicates stronger evidence
against the null hypothesis. If the p-value is less than the significance level (α), the null hypothesis is
typically rejected in favour of the alternative hypothesis
