achieve require precision with reduced rework and easy handling, fixtures are provided.
This project is about designing the fixture for pressing bearing inside the crank case.
For this purpose of designing and analyzing the modeling software known as solid
works is to be used. The fixture is design mainly to get multiple bearing pressed on
crank case while keeping it stable and to get the accuracy of press within tolerance limit.

considerable progress.
New machine tools, high- performance cutting tool, and modern manufacturing
processes enable today's industry to make parts faster than ever before. Although work
holding methods have also advanced gratefully, the basic principles of clamping is still
the same. Mass production methods demanded a fast and easy method of positioning
work for accurate operations on them.
Fixtures are production devices used to perfectly manufacture replicate and
interchangeable parts. Fixtures are especially engineered so that large quantities of parts
can be manufactured or assembled one by one, and to ensure interchangeability of
parts. The economical production of designing parts is highly facilitated by the
availability of fixtures.
The use of a fixture makes a simple operation for one which would otherwise require a
lot of skill and time. Fixtures position components precisely; and hold parts strongly and
prevent their movement during working in order to impart high productivity and part

accuracy. Fixtures hold or grip a work piece in the predetermined manner of tightly and
locate, to perform on the work piece of a manufacturing operation.
A fixture is designed and built to hold and support every part to ensure that each is
machined within the specified limits. The correct relationship and positioning between
the tool and the work piece is conserved. Fixtures may be big or very small. Their use is
limited only by job requirements and the thinking of the designer.
The fixtures must be pcisely e dtmatial sedmu’tbe le o wear and the operational forces
experience during metal machining. Fixtures must be clean, undamaged and free from
chips. Fixtures are precision tools. They are expensive to produce because they are made
to fine limits from materials with good resistance to wear.
They must be properly stored or isolated to prevent accidental damage, and they must
be numbered for identification for future use. 1.2 Objectives The objective of this project

About Industry: ATUL AUTO Limited - Three Wheeler Manufacturer In INDIA Today,
when we see or travel by 'chhakada' we rarely realize who invented this amazing
people- friendly transport vehicle. Well, they take pride in mentioning their founder's
name – the Mr. Jagjivanbhai Karsanbhai Chandra. He was a man of vision. A Dreamer. An
Inventor. A Strategist. And a master-mind who loved challenges.
Back in the 1970's, when transportation was a great problem especially in backward
areas, he decided to start a new trail. He was thinking of an economical mode of
transportation which can benefit backward areas of Saurashtra. The road conditions
were not good but the need for transportation was increasing day by day.
After heavy research and planning, he came up with a vehicle which was skill fully
engineered from a motorcycle. And this is how the first 'chhakada' was developed which
later became a way of earning for the people of Saurashtra. The improvements in
technologies were done gradually to make it a strong and comfortable vehicle. And like
father the son, Mr.
Jayantibhai Chandra also joined this visionary dream. He introduced diesel 'chhakada'
with many few features, and soon 150,000 'chhakadas' were moving and dirting all over
Saurashtra making it easy for passengers. Thddoe’t end with success of 'chhakada'. The

Group's main focus was now to design similar product for mid-urban and sub-urban
areas.
Soon, 'Shakti Mohan' was on the road which proved to be a star light success on other
vehicles like Half Terion, Commercial 3-wheeler and more were also introduced under
the brand name of Shakti Mohan. What's more, in the last five years, the production and
turnover has grown by two folds. The company has achieved turnover of Rs. 528.01
Crores for FY 2015-16 and it is achieved only because of the far-sightedness of Mr.
Jagjivanbhai Karsanbhai Chandra and unending efforts of Mr. Jayantibhai Chandra.
Thanks to them, Atul Auto Limited is pronounced as a leading manufacturer of

Chapter 3: Literature Survey 3.1

The Thesis Report explains the Fixture Design for VMC-430 (3-Axis) machine. The report

Abstract

Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fixture for fixing a formwork used in a precast concrete
formwork with such advantages that a magnet does not attract itself to a platen halfway through an
operation to position a side formwork at a specified position and when the magnet is deviated, even
though slightly, from its fixed position during an operation to attach the magnet to the surface of the
platen, the deviation can be rapidly corrected.
SOLUTION: This fixture is provided for attaching the side formwork to the surface of the platen made
of a magnetic material. In addition, the fixture comprises a main body of the fixture for fixing which
houses the magnet in a firmly retaining manner, a lift supporting means which supports the main
body of the fixture together with the magnet in a freely lifting manner and realizes the attraction of
the magnet to the platen by pushing down the magnet at the point of time when the side formwork
is set at a specified position, and a formwork pressing means which is attached to the main body of
the fixture and fixture the side formwork to the surface of the platen by engaging with the side
formwork.

Abstract: To prevent scratches produced on raceway surfaces during transit of bearing by forcing an
inner ring and outer ring of a bearing in different directions to eliminate gaps in the bearing. A
bearing is clamped with a pair of bearing fixture panels 4, 9 and then adjust screw 6 is pulled out
toward the right by turning a nut 7 and a locknut 8 to provide a spring 5 with tension. The fixture
panel for inner ring 4 forces the inner ring 3 toward the right and the fixture panel for outer ring 9
forces the outer ring 2 toward the left by spring compression so that the inner ring 3 and outer ring 2
are forced in opposite directions each other. Therefore, free movement of rolling elements 1
between the inner 3 and outer 2 rings can be avoided because of no bearing gaps so that no
scratches can be produced on raceway surfaces of the inner 3 and outer 2 rings.

Chapter 4: Problem Identification
4.1 By our observation in the industry we observed following problems:
 We observed in the industry that fixing of bearings inside the crank-case was a tedious job.
 It was done manually by pressing via hands and hammers which was not much accurate.
 Also it was very time consuming job.
 While fixing the bearing they were getting damaged and also after fixing its working was
affected.

Chapter 5: Proposed Method for Solution
5.1 Solution for above mentioned problem:
 Our fixture is designed for pressing the bearing inside the crankcase. This fixture has a special
feature of multiple bearing press at a single stroke.
 This fixture is designed for accuracy while pressing the bearing. The manual pressing via
hands and hammers was not much accurate and was very much time consuming, the reason
behind designing this kind of fixture is the same.
 The fixture we designed is saving the time and also giving the accurate results.
5.2 Components used in our Design Model:
 Lower Base Plate
It is the lowest supporting plate which is used to support the whole structure and
withstand the load on it.
 Resting Plate
It is the plate on which the crank-case (component to be fixed on it) is fastened on it.
This plate is used for easy change of the component to be worked on.

 Guide Rods
These are four rods which guides the press to work on. And they are fixed
perpendicularly on the Lower Base Plate.
 Bush
A bush is a component which helps to run any component resting on it freely or
smoothly. In our project they allow the Upper Base Plate to rest on it and makes them
to runs on the Guide Rod smoothly. These bush contains oil inside it for lubrication.
 Oil Seal
It is a ring type object which helps to block the oil filled inside the bushes.

 Upper Base Plate
It is the component which fixes the Pushers. It is held by four Bush. It also withstand
the load provided from the press.
 Distance Piece
These are the crucial component which keep the Upper Base Plate and the Lower Base
Plate at a fixed distance. They also have a great function which is to protect the work
piece (i.e. Crank-Case) from the Upper Base Plate to crush it.
 Upper Resting Plate
It is the plate on which the pushers are fixed. This plate is used for achieving some
speed in work by changing the plate with the change position of the pushers as the
position of the pushers may change with the change in the position of the work piece
component.

 Pushers
These are those component which holds the bearings to be fixed in the work piece
(i.e. Crank-Case). This Pusher have a small crucial component which is used to hold the
bearing and it is called Ball-Catcher. Ball-Catchers contains a spring inside which
pushes in the outer direction eventually which helps in holding the bearing.

 The distance pieces are glued on the base plate at the edges.
 The bushes are placed on the rods after oiling them.

Chapter 9: Result Analysis
We have done simulation in Solid-Works. Simulation is done on Crank-Case in order to find
maximum stresses and maximum deflection produced in it. The results of simulation have proved
that the Crank-Case will remain safe on application of ram force. The maximum stresses generated in
Crank-Case weren’t exciding the withstanding capacity of the material used in Crank-Case. The
maximum deflections were found to be negligible.
We have also done the analytical calculation. In that we found that the maximum stresses
were not exceeding the endurance limits.

From above results it validates that the result obtained in virtual simulation are correct, because the
analytical results are much similar to the Simulation results. And hence we prove that our Crank-Case
will remain safe wile fixing the bearings via our designed Fixture.
In the case of real world till now misalignment was the cause for occurrence of failure in
bearings due to manual pressing. This phenomena of misalignment was often and thus there was
need to design a fixture as its remedy. In our fixture there will be no chance of misalignment. Thus
there will be no chance of bearing failure.

a. Field of Application / Project / Invention :
Fixtures position components precisely; and hold components strongly and prevent their movement during working in
order to impart great productivity and component accuracy. Fixtures hold or grip a work piece in the
predetermined manner of tightly and locate, to perform on the work piece of a manufacturing operation.The objective of
this project or design is to press multiple bearing inside crank-case
b. Prior Art / Background of the Invention / References :
Over the past century, manufacturing has made considerable progress. New machine tools,
high-performance cutting tools, and modern manufacturing processes enable today's
industries to make parts faster and better than ever before. Although work holding methods
have also advanced gratefully, the basic principles of clamping is still the same. Mass
production methods demanded a flash and easy method of positioning work for accurate
operations on it. Fixtures are production devices used to perfectly manufacture duplicate
and interchangeable parts. Fixtures are especially engineered so that large numbers of parts
can be manufactured or assembled one by one, and to ensure interchangeability of
components. The economical production of designing components is greatly facilitated by
the availability of fixtures. The use of a fixture makes a simple operation for one which
would otherwise require a lot of skill and time. Fixtures position components precisely; and
hold components strongly and prevent their movement during working in order to impart
great productivity and component accuracy. Fixtures hold or grip a work piece in the
predetermined manner of tightly and locate, to perform on the work piece of a
manufacturing operation. A fixture is designed and built to hold, support and locate every
part to ensure that each is machined within the specified limits. The correct relationship and
positioning between the tool and the work piece is conserved. Fixtures may be big or very
small. Their use is limited only by job requirements and the thinking of the designer. The
fixtures must be precisely made and the material used mustn’t be able to wear and the
operational forces experience during metal cutting. Fixtures must be clean, undamaged and
free from chips. Fixtures are precision tools. They are expensive to produce because they
are made to fine limits from materials with good resistance to wear. They must be properly
stored or isolated to prevent accidental damage, and they must be numbered for
identification for future use.
c. Summary of the Invention/Project :
In this project we have designed a fixture for fixing multiple bearings in the crank-case at a time. For that we have
presented some important parts of the fixture along with their dimensions. For more understanding we have also made
videos and animations related to our project.
d. Objects of the Invention/Project :
The objective of this project or design is as follows:
To press multiple bearing inside crank-case
To maintain stability of crank-case while pressing the bearing
To maintain accuracy and precision while pressing bearing inside the crank-case

f. Description of the Invention :
The base plate is fixed on the press via nuts and bolts.
The resting plate is fixed temporarily on the base plate via pins.
The rods are fitted into the base plate via fasteners.
The crankcase is fitted temporarily on the base plate via dowel pins.
The distance pieces are glued on the base plate at the edges.

The bushes are placed on the rods after oiling them.
Oil seal is attached at the base of bush.
The upper base is attached to the bushes via press fit.
Upper Resting plate is attached to upper base via strong pins.
Pushers are attached to resting plate at exact locations marked on it.
Ram clamper is fastened on upper base in the middle portion.
Frame is pinned above the rods at the corners.

6. Abstract of the project / invention :
At present scenario, productivity and economics of machining work pieces in
large quantity is greatly affected by use of work holding devices like fixture. To
achieve require accuracy with reduced rework and easy handling, fixtures are
provided. This project is about designing the fixture for pressing bearing inside
the crank case. For this purpose of designing and analysing the modelling
software known as solid works is to be used. The fixture is design mainly to get
multiple bearing pressed on crank case while keeping it stable and to get the
accuracy of press within tolerance limit.
