Design Brief and Spec
- 1. Today’s Task You are going to write your design brief and specification for show project on a PowerPoint slide that you will then email to Miss M at the end of the lesson. What is a design brief? This is a one paragraph statement of intention that you will make to decide what you are going to design and make. See slide 2 for help with this. What is a specification? A specification is a checklist you will make that your final product must have or do. A specification covers all areas of ACCESS FM. See slide 3. Extension Task – There is an extension task on slide 4 for anyone who finished.
- 2. Learning Objective How can I write a design brief and specification for the shoe project? Writing a Design Brief WHAT? What are you going to design and make? What is it’s function? What will it be inspired by? What size and shape will it be? WHO? Who are you designing for? Be specific – give an age range and make suggestions as to the type of person (e.g. business people, doctors). WHEN/WHERE? Where and/or when do you intend you product to be used? Where will it be sold? WHY? Why have you made these choices? Why is it important that you design and make this product?

How will you design it for this person? Environmental Issues How will you make sure that it is environmentally friendly? Where do you intend your product will be used? Function/Use What is the intended function? Will it have a dual function? Size What will the size and shape be? Why do you want this for your design? Cost How much will it cost? Is this reasonable? Aesthetics How will it look and feel? Is there a reason for this? Materials What material will you make it from and why is this a good choice? You can choose from Plywood, MDF, Acrylic or Polypropylene. Safety How will you make sure that your product is safe? Writing a Specification Use ACCESS FM to structure your Spec.
