INTRODUCTION
IN YOLA, ADAMAWA STATE, TEMPERATURES USUALLY SOAR ABOVE FOURTY DEGREES CELCIUS, ESPECIALLY DURING THE DRY
SEASONS.
UNIVERSITY HOSTEL BUILDINGS, SUCH AS MODIBBO ADAMA UNIVERSITY FACES SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGES IN MAINTAINING THERMAL
COMFORT. Many of these hostel buildings are constructed with limited attention to climate-responsive design
principles SUCH AS poorly insulated concrete walls, inadequate natural ventilation, small or inoperable
windows, and the absence of shading devices or thermal mass. Consequently, indoor temperatures in hostels can
become unbearably high, severely affecting students' health, comfort, concentration, and overall academic
performance. THE PROPOSED HOSTEL DESIGN WILL SOLVE THE AFOREMENTIONED PROBLEM BY ADHEREING TO THE SOLUTIONS
MENTIONED ALSO.
brief development
brief
the students hostel is designed to embody thermal comfort
as a whole. integrating climate responsive materials and
construction methods. there by standing out as an
embodiment of climate responsive building
aim
To achieve passive cooling in the design of student
hostel in the hot climate of Adamawa and to enhance
thermal comfort and energy efficiency
site and users
the building will be located in the university premises, beside the male new hostel, for the university student.

5. The BUILDING design should embrace
the cool, dry Northeast Trade Wind
for passive cooling. Large, openable
windows on the northeast side will
enable natural ventilation, reducing
the need for mechanical cooling.
Courtyards and shaded outdoor
spaces should align with this wind
direction to maximize airflow

MAJOR LANDMARKS AROUND THE SITE
ARE THE DEPARTMENTS OF ELECTRICAL

THE SITE.
1 sunrise IS AVERAGELY BY SIX am.glare could
bE prevented from this axis by utilizing
shading devices eastwards of THE SITE.
1 midday sun IS BY TWELVE pm
.–solar cells and
roof lights could be positioned
southwards to optimize daylight
1 sunset IS BY SIX0pm.fenestrations could be
provided westwardsto provide visual
access to the evening sunset scenery
PREVAILING WINDS
The BUILDING must protect against the strong, moisture-laden Southwest Monsoon Wind.
Landscaping, such as trees, will act as windbreaks, and deep overhangs will shield windows and
walls from rain. Sloped roofs will ensure efficient drainage, while minimizing windows on the
southwest side will prevent moisture infiltration. Structural reinforcement will guard against
wind-driven rains, maintaining durability.

TWO MAJOR FOOT PATHS
AND SEVRAL UNDEFINED
FOOT PATHS.THE DESIGN
WILL CONSIDER AND
INCOORPORATE THE

BUILDING.
ROAD ACCESS
THE ONLY ACCESS ROAD IS LOCATED EAST OF THE
SITE. THE BUILDING WILL BE ORIENTATED TO FACE
THE ROAD IN ORDER TO ENHANCE EASY ACCESS IN TO
THE SITE. THE ROAD IS LESS BUSY MODERATE
PEDESTRIAN ACTIVITIES ON THE ROAD,
ALSO, PEDESTRIAN SIDE WALKS SHALL
INCORPORATED INTO THE DESIGN TO ENHANCE
CIRCULATION AROUND THESITE. WHERE NEED BE,
DRAINAGES AROUND ROADS AND PAVEMENTS WILL
ALSO BE DESIGNED TO ENSURE
WATER DRAINAGE AND PASSAGE AROUND THE AREA.

THE SITE IS RELATIVELY FLAT WITH VERY FEW TREES
AND SHRUBS
SIOL TYPE AND VEGETATION
THE SOIL COMPOSITION OF THE SITE IS CLAY AND SANDY SOIL.
THERE WILL BE ADEQUATE SOIL TESTS TO DETERMINE THE DEPTH OF
FOUNDATIONS FOR THE BUILDING.
THE SITE, BECAUSE OF THE SUDAN REGION OF ADAMAWA STATE,
HAS VERY LITTLE TREES AND SHRUBS WITH GRASSES DURING RAINY
SEASONS. HUMAN ACTIVITIES, LIKE FARMING ALSO AFFECTS THE
VEGETATION OF THE SITE. GREEN AREAS SHALL BE INCOOPERATED
INTO THE SITE TO MITIGATE ADVERSE ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS
AND DEGREDATION.
