Design Principles
Balance - Weight
These ‘Steam Punk’
  broaches seem unevenly
  balanced however,
  when one looks closer
  we notice the objects are
  evenly placed and
  therefore seem evenly
  weighted.
                              http://www.gracefultouch.us/broach2p.htm
Balance - Radial
                                     http://duldule.com/2011/04/the-building-design-
                                     of-moses-mabhida-stadium-by-gmp-architekten/

• The Moses Madiba Stadium
is a great example of a
  perfectly balanced, radial
design, it starts from a centre
  point and expands
  outwardly. The photograph
  below however is less
  balanced but one almost
  imagines invisible radial
  lines extending out the
  bottom of the image.
                                    http://www.flickr.com/photos/46926995@N06/
                                    5002078128/
Proportion - Distortion
• In this image, the sun
  has been minimized by
  it’s distance from the
  figure, this is also
  accentuated by the hand
  placement of the person,
  making it look like they
  are holding the sun in
  his/her hands. http://www.insteadof.com/photogallery/Other/Family/p4.htm
Proportion - create symbolic
                  meaning
• In this top sculpture, symbolic http://www.mla
significance is emphasized by the hanas.de/Gree
                                        ks/Mythology/H
minimized earth on the back of erculesPortMer
                                        ion.html
“Hercules” - giving a meaning of
him ‘carrying the world on his
  shoulders’. The sculpture below is
one of the “Venus of Willendorf”
fertility symbols - her accentuated http://en.wikip
  breasts and stomach area edia.org/wiki/
                                         Venus_of_Wil
emphasize the notion of female lendorf

  fertility.
Repetition - Pattern
• In this image, the
  repetition of the shapes
  in black and white
  create an almost
  mundane emotional
  quality which makes the
  clothing pop forward.

                             http://shopstorezone.com/interior/clothing-store/the-interior-

                             studio/
Repetition
     • In this top photograph one
can see how repetition can be
       found in nature, the shapes
created on the sand give the
       earth a puzzle quality
       through the continuous
       shapes.In the image below,
       one can see how repetition
can be used in an animal’s
       camouflage.

landscapes.php camouflage-pictures.html
Dominance - Focal point
• The focal point here is in
  the centre of the piece,
  the light above the dog’s
  head emphasizes ‘this’
  dog as being the
  dominant figure here.

                               http://jfaccento.quicm.net/blog/tag/principles-of-design/
Dominance
• In this top image, there are
  invisible radial lines
  directing to the the dominant
  figure, the zebra is also
  raised higher then the others
drawing our eyes to it. In the
  following image, the
  dominant figure is the largest
  and her colouring is
alternative to the rest of the
  piece which accentuates her
  dominance.
                                                          http://blackcatbooks.com/category/art/

Contrast
      • Here, the ultra-modern
        circular structure is
        contrasting seriously as
the rest of the pond is
        rather typical and
        earthy looking.

http://www.decorfortheoutdoors.com/pond-fountains.html
Contrast
        • The object above has a
          spiky exterior whilst the
          internal looks smooth
          and almost soft. Below,
          this chair is separated
          into separate pieces, the
          bottom seems soft and
          bendy while the top
          looks rigid and hard.

Direction - Movement
• In this piece one can see
  the direction in which
  the figure is moving, the
  loose paint work
  emphasizes this.

                              http://www.graphicsart.org/tag/photos-of-movement-art/
Movement
• The repetition in the top
  image creates the
  movement and shows
  the direction in which
  the figure is moving. The
  bottom image looks as
  though it is spiraling
  through the radial
  repetition.

Harmony
      • The soft lines and soft
        tones in this piece evoke
        a sense of stillness and
        tranquility .

http://fineartamerica.com/featured/autumn-harmony-leonard-holland.html
Harmony
      • Symmetrical shapes and
        patterns give an almost
        comforting feeling,
        especially with the pink
        and yellow in this
        image. The curvilinear
        lines in the image below
        also evoke a sense of
        harmony.

Variety
• In this piece there are
  different colours that
  have been used to bring
in a sense of variety, it
  makes the piece more
  exciting and alternative.

                              http://tophera.wordpress.com/2008/10/15/principles-of-
                              design/
Variety
       • This piece has a variety
         of lines moving in
         different directions
         emphasized by the
         changes in colour. The
         piece below has a
         constant tonal quality
         but the differentiation in
         the shapes depict variety

                                              http://www.abstract-art-blog.net/2010/08/fridays-

Symbolic meaning
• The ‘Statue of liberty’
  has a purpose, it stands
  as a universal reminder
  of ‘freedom’, it embodies
  ‘hope’ for American
  citizens.

                              http://www.newsinus.us/politics/statue-of-liberty-facts/
Symbolic meaning
       • This is the Irish
         ‘Claddagh’ symbol - a
         symbol signifying
         loyalty and love. Below
         is an engagement ring
         made in the symbol, this
would be a symbol of a
         ever lasting love and
         loyalty to partners.
                                                                                  http://www.dvb.ie/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?S

Composition
• In this piece the
  composition and
  placement emphasize a
  sense of depth, even
  though the piece is only
  created in black, the
  placement evokes a
  sense of loneliness.

                             http://claralieu.wordpress.com/category/ink-drawings/page/3/
Composition
        • The top piece’s
          composition is held
          together by the
          similarities in the
          shapes, this is
          alternative to the picture
          below witch is held
          together by tonal
          variants and similarities.
