Hulu Langat is a beautiful site but can never seem to catch a break from natural disasters such as floods, landslides,
and high rainfall due to its climate and geographical location. This is the hazard exposure under physical vulnerabilities
that the site is facing. Other than that, infrastructure like bridges and roads are imperfection in have the risk of
collapse. The non-optimistic economic environment loading to low-income societies too.
SITE ANALYSIS & REACTION
1ONE.1
When the ‘devastating’ flood on 23 December 2021 happened in Hulu Langat, we can see the intangible social
vulnerabilities which are a lack of evacuation plan and proper gathering spaces for evacuation. The goal of disaster
prevention is very clear that is to ensure the safety of people’s lives with the concept of ‘Life First’.

LITERATURE REVIEW
Design Studio 5 Portfolio
The rural communities are known for the spirit of togetherness
of connecting families and neighbors despite the yearly
flooding. However, their own assets and shared resources are
insufficient to be prepared for future hazards. It is the spirit of
togetherness that determines the safety and the resilience of
Hulu Langat.
Because no society is ever fully risk-free or resistant to all
dangers, building resilience is a continuous effort rather than a
one-time act.

2TWO.2
CONCEPTUAL MODEL
The model has a strong circle base to act as a central point to gather
everything with a rock texture to show how strong it is to sit still even
when flooding. On top of it have a pathway that represents a line that
goes through the Hulu Langat and every turning point act as a nude, at
the end it connects all people in Hulu Langat to this point because
"UNITED WE STAND!"
we connect people as well as the water together
with the concave space to mitigate the flooding
2TWO.3

SITE
STRATEGY
The red circles represent where
all the roadside food stalls
around site 2 with the black
circle. These food stalls act as
small nodes to gather people
around them.
A new node WARUNG is
designed to be located in all the
red circles replacing the food
stalls and acting as temporary
refuges.
When all the nodes are
connected it will act as an
evacuation path through the
evacuation center.

SITE
STRATEGY
The circulation approach shows
that the vehicle's main asses
from the West and secondary
access are from the South.
Landscape and sense show that
the main wind approach from
the East.
Main road access from the
West is more toward public and
the East where the forest is
located is more toward private.
The daily Routine of Hulu
Langat residents shows that
children play a lot, old age
gathers most of the time,
middle-aged females will take
care of the house and males will
do the heavier work in their
daily routine.
2TWO .4
SITE
STRATEGY
The first thing people go
through the main entrance, they
will see and hear people smiling
and laughing faces from the
external recreational area to
attach people's attention.
After that, there has a straight
circulation that directly brings
people into the main programs
from two entrances.
Market and food stalls are
placed at the second entrance
with open spaces following
linear simple circulation to bring
people into the private
programs ( Internal Area).

SITE
STRATEGY
Two linear accessibility brings
people into the main programs
that can also become an
evacuation area
It is lifted up to a higher ground
level that can avoid the flooding
and it provided the private
spaces need.
As the second entrance first
floor level it can use as storage
for markets and food stalls
when flooding happens they
will have enough food supply
and face disaster individually.

SITE
STRATEGY
Spaces are all located
surrounding the central
retention pond area that can be
used for central interaction &
event spaces too.
Simple linear accessibility brings
people into the internal
programs
3THREE.1
BIG IDEA
The study shows that the site
has flooding, low economic
market value, and lacks proper
evacuation and gathering
spaces. The design intention is
to ensure residents evacuate
effectively. gather people and
also rejuvenate.
The economic flow starts from
both communities of Hulu
Langat and private investors.
After that monthly 60% of the
profit come from the
community agriculture and
husbandry, and the rental from
the market and food stall ( 70%
community will contribute ) to
encourage resident to do
business here rather than
beside the roadway with
dangerous and illegal. Out of
60% profit, 10% will be kept for
relief purposes.
3THREE.2
JOURNEY OF THE
PROGRAMMES
Provide Hulu Langat residents with what
they need . Football area that kampung
kids like a lot, The daily supplies that every
family needs, and of course the local food
that shows Hulu Langat culture. event and
prayer space is provided at the same time
as an evacuation space too.

DESIGN
DEVELOPMENT
The design inspire by warung

achieve high and open spaces
for market and food stalls.
Prayer and evacuation are
also aim to achieve high and
open spaces for the interior
but with exploded structure
on the outside.
3THREE.6
ISOMETRIC

Isometric exploded shows
that the frame work structure
are using rush pattern copper
and side clip joint to
represent the timber
framework structure and joint
in Hulu Langat but more
resilience in construction and
more durable.
