Design Unlearning Realizations: Design is universal and is evident everywhere. I love to travel and interact with people There a is some learning from almost everyone. I can make people smile through my camera. India is really-really beautiful and that the more I travel, the more I love it. However, design is not understood properly outside a limited circle within India. I am still understood to do Fashion Design in my home-town, even after 9 years. User experience is definitely not as easy to be understood as it sounds. That is precisely because UX is not limited to just the interfaces. Design can play a role in solving some of the world’s problems. One needs to experience design day in and day out. You have to do what you love.

Have ‘ design thinking ’ and ‘social innovation ’ become permanently intertwined? Inspire Ideate Implement
3C Communicate Collaborate Create

Understanding the context properly Talk to and study different stakeholders

Take loads of pictures Become a storyteller

From the large problem space identify small problems Tackle them one by one

Understand the different user groups The affected group may not be the target group

Find different ways to invest effort Money is not the only solution

So then, why is DFSI difficult?

Often problems are Wicked & Complex problems It is difficult to identify the core

One needs to have patience, spend time on it These days we all seem to be in a hurry

Location visit is not always possible Often one has to rely on data & information collected by someone else

Empathize with the audience Cultural Sensitivity often plays spoilsport

Editor's Notes

  • #2: Feels nice to be back  , I know a lot of people here, but just for the people who do not know me, I worked here as my first and only full time job, in 2005 to 2007. After I left, I realized that I worked for a good 1 year, 11 months and 1 day. Never knew why but I always found that interesting.
  • #3: As probably you already know by now, I run two start-ups. One is Deskala, which is a design startup, and the other is HappyHorizonStudios which is the photography startup. So yes I am living the hard life of the startup, but it’s a lot of fun and satisfaction more than anything else. So there’s marketing, accounts, and being the chai-wala, to the office boy to the clear to everything.
  • #4: Phew.. A good 2 years and 3 months since I left here and I think that I have totally changed my view on design. In this presentation today I am not going to discuss anything usability and interface design, as I believe we are all already good at this. What I am however going to talk about and share is some stories from the
  • #5: In this presentation today I am not going to discuss anything technical. I hope to make it very casual, enjoyable through the photographs. So no user interfaces, no usability, no graphic design, as I understand that the reason why we all are here is because we are already good on those things .
  • #6: Some of you may know that I travel and do a lot of photography too. And that is going to be there at the back of the presentation throughout.
  • #8: However I am going to touch upon some learning’s in the past few years and how it has helped me understand design from a different perspective altogether.
  • #9: One would expect that when you have your own startup. That is precisely because they are the things that I was interested in in-theory. So the best way to really understand whether I really liked it was to try it out. I left here and I think that I have
  • #12: All these realizations made me take more interest in the topic of Design for Social Impact. And that has been the topic of my interest in my travels and research over the past year or two. It has been an inspiration for me to come back from the US and it has been an inspiration to start Deskala.
  • #17: Inspired by one of this
  • #22: Well in order to even attempt to do something,
  • #23: Ideo with Acumen Fund and their Ripple Effect project – provide clean drinking water to people
  • #24: Frog Design and its association with Project Masiluleke
  • #30: relying on a better understanding of Humans every year they invite designer
  • #76: Impor
  • #77: Important to know that yes you can make a difference.
  • #78: Because if you have that faith in yourself, one will find people who will be willing to join hands with you.
  • #79: Think out of the box
  • #80: Be thankful for what you have and finally spread the smiles
