- 4. HOW DO I READ CALL NUMBERS? YOU NEED TO KNOW SOME BASICS: DEWEY NUMBERS 000-999 Every book is labeled with a number and/or series of letters for the author or editor’s name. Almost all of the dewey categories represent nonfiction: informational and factual. However, there are included in the dewey numbers categories for myths and legends, folklore, literature.

- 6. READING CALL NUMBERS Fiction is arranged by the author’s last name. It is such a big section in the Dewey 800’s, many libraries, like PRT, separate it (except poetry, drama, and some literature). FIC or SC PIK ALA

Technology, computers, computer science, encyclopedias, news media, journalism, publishing 100’s Psychology and Philosophy: “Who Am I?”— Man thinks about himself. supernatural, paranormal, astrology, philosophy, psychology, psychiatry

Dewey Numbers 200’s Religions and Mythology: “Who made me?”— Man thinks about god. theology, Christianity, bibles, other religions, mythology 300’s Social Sciences and Folklore: “Who is that guy in the cave next door?”— Man thinks about other people. almanacs, economics, political science, environment, ecology, corporations, government, law, military, crime, justice, social issues, education, railroads, ships, air travel, cultures, traditions, customs, fashion, holidays, folktales
- 9. Dewey Numbers 400’s Languages and Grammar: “How can I talk to that guy next door?”— Man thinks about communication. word origins, sign language, alphabets, languages
- 10. Dewey Numbers 500’s Natural Science, Math and Science: “How can I understand the world around me?”— Man thinks about nature. math types, astronomy, physics, chemistry, earth science, dinosaurs, life sciences, botanical sciences (plants), zoological sciences (animals)

Dewey Numbers 900’s Geography and History: “How can I leave a record for men of the future?”— Man thinks about the past and present: people, places, and events. world history, geography and travel, explorers, atlases, travel guides, general histories, ancient civilizations, genealogy *** 920: Biography/Autobiography
