Different Between POS and Payment Gateway!
A POS system (Point of Sale system) and a payment gateway serve different purposes within
the payment processing and retail transaction ecosystem. Here’s a breakdown of the key
differences:
1. Functionality
 POS System: A POS system is hardware and software that businesses use to manage
in-person sales. It allows businesses to process transactions, manage inventory, track
sales data, and even handle customer management. It’s primarily used in physical
retail locations like stores, restaurants, or service providers.
 Payment Gateway: A payment gateway is a digital tool that authorizes online
payments for e-commerce stores or mobile apps. It acts as a bridge between the
merchant’s website and the payment processor, ensuring the secure transfer of
payment information during an online transaction.
2. Usage
 POS System: Used in physical retail environments where customers make purchases
at a store, restaurant, or physical location. The POS can integrate with card readers,
receipt printers, and other physical devices.
 Payment Gateway: Primarily used for online transactions, such as e-commerce
websites or mobile applications, where customers enter their payment details
through a web interface.
3. Transaction Process
 POS System: Handles in-person payments, where a customer physically swipes, taps,
or inserts a credit card, or pays with cash. It can also process mobile payments (e.g.,
Apple Pay).
 Payment Gateway: Processes online transactions, verifying card details, and securing
the payment data. It communicates between the merchant, the acquiring bank, and
the issuing bank to approve or decline the payment.
4. Security
 POS System: Includes encryption to protect card data at the point of sale, but may
rely on external hardware or payment processors for secure handling of the payment
data.
 Payment Gateway: Focuses heavily on data encryption and security, ensuring that
customer information is safely transmitted online and compliant with PCI DSS
standards.
5. Hardware Integration
 POS System: Requires physical hardware such as terminals, barcode scanners, and
card readers.
 Payment Gateway: Does not require physical hardware; it is a software interface
integrated with online platforms or apps.
6. Customer Interaction
 POS System: Customers interact directly with a cashier or a self-service machine in a
physical location.
 Payment Gateway: Customers interact remotely by entering their payment details on
a website or mobile app.
Example Scenarios:
 POS System: A restaurant uses a POS system to track orders, accept payments, and
manage inventory.
 Payment Gateway: An online store uses a payment gateway to process credit card
payments made by customers buying items online.
In summary, a POS system is used for in-person transactions, while a payment gateway is
used for online payments. They both facilitate payments, but in different contexts and with
different infrastructures.
