This document discusses computer networks and local area networks (LANs). It defines a network as consisting of two or more linked computers that share resources and exchange files. The computers can be connected by cables, phone lines, wireless technologies or other means. A LAN is described as a group of computers and devices connected by a common line or wireless link and sharing resources within a small physical area, ranging from a few users to thousands. Common network components, topologies, and standard network types are also outlined.
