Movable type involves setting type by hand for letterpress printing and dates back to the 15th century. Letters are individually cut from wood or metal. Letterpress still exists on a smaller scale using photopolymer plates to translate digital designs for use on vintage presses, providing a flexible and reliable printing method. Wood block printing is a form of letterpress and the oldest technique, where an image is carved in reverse into wood and paper is pressed on top to transfer the ink. Flexography uses rubber plates and water-based inks for faster drying, better suited to materials like plastic. Silk screen printing is well-suited to brightly colored materials like t-shirts and posters using a stencil process.
