• Unique contribution of Indian Aesthetic to the
world of criticism.
• Bharat Muni in his book Natyashastra.
• Rug Ved:- Water, milk, juice of fruits.
• Atharva Ved:- sap of grain, quintessence.
• Natyashastra uses in different contract.
• He mentioned that rasa is delighted and
pleasurable experience related human emotion.
Eros (shringara)
 Two aspects:-
1.vipralambam ( love in
sepration)
2. Ayoga ( Absence of
union)
 Example :- Nar-Narayana,
visnu, mughal
paintings,Radha krishna.

Comic ( Hasya )
 Distinct varieties:-
1.smita(gentle smile)
2.Hasita (slight laughter)
3.Vihasita (open laughter)
4.Uphasita(Laughter of ridicule)
5.Aphasita(obscene laughter)
6.Atihasit(boisterous laughter)
Example:- Ravan’s laughter.
Grief (Karuna)
• Bad or sad news.
• Certain facial expression.
• Eye lids, signs of sorrow.
• Example :- Ram’s face
when Laxman was wound
Kalidasa’s work.
Rage ( Raudra)
 Described anger.
 Identify by weapons,
fearful eyes. Stretched
eyebrows.
 Example :-shiv Natraj
idol , Durga kills demon
Mahisa.
Courage (Veer)
• Fearlessness, self
assurance,
determination, heroism.
• Example:- Hanuman
burns Lanka. Ram
defeat Ravan on the
battlefield.
Fear ( Bhayanka)
• Fear of evil.
• Evoke anxiety
• Feeling of helplessness
evoked by cruel or giant.
• Example:- character of
giant or monster.
Disgust (Bibhatsa)
• Result of seeing or
hearing anything
improper, unholy,
unhealthy, immoral and
vulgar.
• Act against society.
• Example:- movies and
songs lyrics.
Wonder ( Adbhuta )
• Unexpected achievements.
• Come across something
divine and supernatural.
• Example:- magic, or Shree
Ram .
Peace ( shanta)
• For true Peace, body,
mind, ego, and intellect
• Requires purity and
spirituality.
• Example :- Om chanting,
Meditation.
• Two conditions for Spectators:-
1. Attention is necessary.
2. They must be responsive.
 Two condition for Actor.
1. Performance should be harmonious.
2. They should be skillful.
