This document discusses the functions of different types of white blood cells (leukocytes). It describes the roles of basophils, monocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and eosinophils. Basophils release histamine and other substances that promote inflammation and allergic reactions. Monocytes become tissue macrophages that migrate to sites of infection and engulf and kill bacteria. Neutrophils are the first immune cells to respond to infection, using granules and oxidants to kill bacteria. Lymphocytes include T cells, B cells, and other types. Eosinophils are present in mucous membranes and have roles in allergic responses, phagocytosis, and destroying parasites.
