Digipak Analysis
- 3. We are presented first with the front cover image. It is half illustration half photograph. It is a picture of the singer of the band. The colour scheme is very earthy orange, yellow, black and green based, which were popular colours used during the 70’s for graphics etc. when funk and soul was the prominent genre of the time. The fonts used are very simple yet bold, they stand out directing the persons attention to the band name and the album name. It also ties in very well with the front cover image as the colours coordinate very well. The simplicity of the front cover is very attractive as it isn’t too full or messy which makes it easy to understand what the genre is and what we may expect when we listen to the CD. Although there is no synergy to be found between this digipak and music videos, as they haven’t made any, it still represents the band well as they are very colourful in their other photo-shoots and CD covers.
- 4. When the front cover is open, there is a picture of the Dap-Kings on the left. The colours tie in well even though it contrasts with the black because it still has the yellow and orange tones to it. It was important to add a photo of the Dap-Kings as they were not visible on the front cover therefore letting the person know what the whole band looks like. Star image is then established as we can see what they are dressing like and how they present themselves through body language. On the bottom of the image institutional information is given. Daptone Records, the address of the record label and also the website. On the right side, they write about the members of the Dap-King’s, showing their name, role in the band and even their star sign. This is quite effective as there is a more personal relationship between the person listening to their music and to the musician, they also state the credits to the producers and recorders etc.
- 5. When completely opened, we see that the middle compartment contains the CD. The CD is black, has the name of the album and the bad in the same font used as on the front cover. There is also the Record labels logo and again the address of the Label. There is also the credits to a few people who wrote and arranged the songs on the CD. The inside is all a blue colour as it the continuation of the image on the far left side. It creates an interesting and effective contrast to the back side as well as the CD as it is completely black. On the far right side, there is a personal message from the band to the reader, explaining the beauty of the album and how they are passionate about their music and the creation they have made. The end of it says “Open your mind, your body, and your soul to SHARON JONES in the same way that she opened her own to us@ Lovingly, passionately… and naturally” this is a direct connection the album title as it is “Naturally”
- 6. On the back cover (behind the CD) there is the song list. It is written in the simple white font that is visible throughout the Digipak creating unity and simplicity instead of messiness and disorder. There is also the illustration of the front cover without the manipulation of the picture of Sharon Jones in it. It is very simplistic as it is just white thin digital sketching. There is also the barcode on the far left corner. I think that this Digipak, overall, is simplistic and effective as it clearly presents the band and it is very easy to see what the genre is, just by looking at the front cover. The colour scheme and font is continuous creating fluidity and simplicity.
