Alt-J – Matilda • This digipak follows the theme of space as its main colour scheme consists of
black, dark purple and yellow. These colours are usually associated with space.
Each side consists of black which is the main colour. The bottom left page has the
mixed colour scheme filled into the font which helps to establish the theme. They
have not used any images of the actual band but chosen to use the theme in
order to be aesthetic, as the band is of an indie genre they prefer themes and
pretty backgrounds/colours rather than having the actual faces of the band
members.
• They have also included their symbol of the triangle which suggests the letter A
which stands for the bands name. This is a key part of the bands merchandise
and albums as it is their logo and what their fans may know them by, therefore
including it is significant. This page ties into the bottom left page as it has the
black background and the triangle is filled in with the same colour scheme of
yellow and dark purple sky.
• They have also included a side with a list of the songs included in the album
which is necessary as it allows the audience to know the order of the songs and
which ones are actually on the CD. On this page they have used a white font due
to the contrast from the dark background. They have also used orange for the
font numbers which fits into their theme. The font used is similar to a typewriter
but it is also futuristic to fit into the space theme.
• One of the pages includes a quote from the band, it is written on a black
background with the same white typewriter font, in order to link everything
together and keep the theme consistent. The use of a quote makes it more
personal, so the viewers feel like they have received something extra that is also
meaningful.
• Two of the pages only consist of the space background without any text, this acts
as a filler as they have no real purpose but help to fill space and continue the
theme in order to remain aesthetically pleasing to its viewers.
• This digipak is likely to attract young adults aged between 16 and 24, as well as
those who are interested in being edgier and are typically artistic as they are
known to be into aseptically pleasing themes and they also tend to be interested
in indie music and lifestyle so they would appreciate the look of the digipak.
Marina & the diamonds – The family jewels
• The digipak pack does not really have consistent colour scheme as it is mostly
just a series of images of the artist. The artist has used three images of herself
that have been animated, which make them stand out from other digipaks. The
image on the bottom right corner which would be the cover has her lying
horizontally, facing the camera. The image is more seductive as she is looking
into the camera, making direct eye contact, her lips slightly parted and her hair is
messily laid out on the floor. The artists name is also written on the front and is
placed around her so her face is not covered. The font used is messy and cursive
to look like handwriting which makes it more personal, the font size also
decreases in size as it goes down. The font is in white which helps it stand out as
the background is darker.
• The image on the next page, has her tilting her head back and looking slightly to
right. The image is also quite seductive as it looks like she doesn’t have any
clothes on and the positioning reinforces that. The song names are place around
her making sure to not cover her face. The same font and colour is used as it
helps to keep everything consistent and adds a personal touch. On the bottom
left corner they have included a short description which may give the viewers an
insight into the album.
• The third image which is included inside is a close up of her face, it follows the
slightly animated theme. Half her face is covered as she is doing a gun sign,
which may be to show her being more aggressive, it also makes the viewer think
that she is an R&B artist instead of an indie/pop artist. She is looking into the
camera and making eye contact so it is more engaging for the viewers.
• The CD has a simple deign as it is just silver with the artist name in a black font
that is used throughout the digipak.
• The audience may be mixed although she is an indie/pop artist the look of the
digipak may attract people interested in R&B music. Young women are likely to
be attracted to the design and look of the digipak, however, the use of sexual
images may also attract men.
The 1975
• The front cover has a very eye catching image at the use of a black ground
contrasts well with white light from frame. They have put the band name inside
the frame to make it look like it is popping out which is also eye catching for the
viewers. The band name is written in white lights, the font is also bold,
minimalistic and mature, it is also very distinctive so when people look at it they
are able to know what it is. They have chosen to not include images of the band
as a lot of indie bands choose to not have their images included and focus on
creating an aesthetic background through images, fonts and colours scheme.
• The inside of the digipak folds out and includes an image of the band. They have
maintained the black and white theme to remain consistent. The image adds a
personal feel to the digipak as the viewers are getting something extra,
considering a lot of indie bands don’t include their own images. Their clothing
and style is different to the mature look of the cover as they are dressed in
hoodies and flannels. This may be to appeal to both genders as the mature and
simple design would appeal to females but the positioning and clothing of the
band may attract males.
• The back of the digipak also follows the main colour scheme and the use of the
frame with white lighting, in side the frame they have included the names of their
songs, which is typical convention of digipaks as the viewers would want to know
the songs included. They have also added additional information on the back this
is to give the viewers something extra.
• The audience are likely to be young women age between 14 and 24 as they have
a more broad age group because their look and genre of music appeals to a lot
of young women. The digipak may appeal to young men as they have used a
black and white colour scheme which can appeal to both genders as well as the
way the band member are presented.
