Digipak analysis
For our front cover we decided to keep it quite plain. The
reason for this is because we did not want to over-
complicate our Digipak as a common connotation of
childhood is simplicity. Furthermore in order to follow
this theme the only writing we used was the title of our
song “When I Was A Youngster”. We chose to use a white
font for this title as it was the colour that stood out best
against our background. This meant that it was easier to
catch the audiences eye and draw their attention to the
Digipak. We also chose this font because it was bold and
easy to read, but also because it was simple. For the front
cover we added a cartoon effect over the picture as this
also reinforces the idea of youthfulness in our Digipak. It
also made our Digipak unique to others as in order for it
to remain plain, it needed something slightly different so
it is not viewed as boring. We chose the picture of
Hussain (policeman) looking astonished as George
(superman) fly's as it not only do the costumes appear
multiple times in our video but also because the idea of
superheroes and police and robbers is commonly
associated with children's imagination. T also has a very
clear blue sky that fits the blue colour scheme of our
Digipak very well.
The back cover of our Digipak is the side with the main
information that the buyer would need to know.
Similarly to the front cover one of the main reasons we
chose this picture to use as our background was the
dominant blue sky that features in it, helping to
continue the blue colour scheme along with blue of
Georges superman costumes. In the bottom left of the
back cover we chose to place the companies logo. This
was in order to brand our company and inform the
buyer of the producers. We chose to include the
barcode in the bottom right, which will allow an easy
purchase for the customer. We chose to put it on the
back cover as this is on th external side of the case so
will be easier to scan, and also it is where the rest of the
information is so will be easy to locate. Perhaps the
most important part of the back cover is the track list.
This is a clear list of the songs that comes in the album
along with our main feature song “When I Was A
Youngster”. Once again we used white font so it is clear
and easy to read for the buyer. We also chose to have a
white border around the track list so it stood out more
against the background.
This side of the Digipak is the most simple
side out of the six. The reason for this is
because it is it is not on the external side of
the Digipak so furthermore does not need to
catch the audiences eye. It is simply a picture
of the two character sitting on a crossbar. We
decided to use this picture as the connotations
of football and the park often relate to
childhood and having fun. In order to suite the
rest of the front images we kept the characters
in their costumes. The cartoon effect that we
used over the top of the image is very effective
on this side as it strengthens the colour of the
sky and allows different shades of blue to be
viewed, following our colour scheme.
These two covers even though being split by the middle inside cover interact with one each other.
Motion studios brainstormed what do the majority of people associate childhood and innocent fun
with ? We decided that catch resembled this best. Furthermore we had both our characters playing
catch. On the right inside cover we have Hussain throwing a tennis ball that we edited in. And on
the left we have George posing as if he is ready to catch the ball. This is not only to enforce the
youth theme but also to show the character friendship which our music video focuses on. For the
characters outfits we changed from the policeman and superman costumes to bright casual
clothing. The charters wear these costumes (hat and Jumper) multiple times in the video so we
decided to use them in the Digipak as well to once again build upon their character profile. The
costumes also are bright and colourful allowing the Digipak to appear more interesting then if they
were just to wear plain clothing. In terms of the background we chose a very plain fading blue
effect. This was to ensure that the main focus goes towards the characters and the interaction
rather then anything behind them. Obviously using the colour blue to create a flow of colours
between each side of the Digipak. Georges jumper and jeans also helps to enforce the colour
scheme. We used the floating grass podiums as they are unique and once again express the idea of
childhood imagination. Even though our main colour scheme is blue in each side we have a
secondary colour of green so the podiums help to continue this as well.
The last part of the Digipak to analyse is the middle of
the inside. This part of the Digipak is where the disc for
the album is. We decided that the design of our disc
should be the world. Our editor designed it with a border
of a sky and planes around it to make sure it is clear that
its the disc. Not only is this because the shape would be
suitable but also because it relates directly to our song.
Within “When I Was A Youngster” the lyrics “I wanted to
be everything on the planet” is repeated throughout. Due
to this we thought the world would be a good feature to
have as our disc. The World is also representive of a kids
dreams and potential so follows our theme. The
background we used is the same as the inside left and
right cover to ensure that there is a flow between the
three sides so the interaction of playing catch would
work. By having the world in the middle it suggests the
two characters are almost throwing a ball over the world
once again portraying the lack of limitations when your
young.
