What is Digital Communication?
 Digital Communication is simply the exchange of
information via digital media.
 This includes email, video chat, social media, digital text,
websites, etc.
The growth of Digital Communication.
How has digital communication changed
education?
 Provides teachers with more ways to easily
connect with students and parents.
 Allows for classroom learning to be linked to
distributed in varied ways.
 Provides students with new ways to connect
with curriculum (i.e. D2L, Video
Conferencing, Online Learning.
What digital communication tools are
available to teachers?
 Social networking sites
 YouTube
 Edmodo
 Remind 101
 Pinterest
 Khan Academy
 Prezi
 Quizlet
 Dropbox
What ways can teachers use digital
communication?
 Teacher-student communication
 Teacher-parent communication
 Sharing ideas with colleagues
 Posting classrooms assignments
 Posting reminders to students and parents
 Gaining access to new teaching materials
 Giving students more time to access classroom lessons
 Posting review materials
 Many options are available to users
 Email
 Text
 Video
 Convenient (can be done from almost
anywhere)
 Affordable (many email and social media
accounts are totally free)
 Fast and Efficient
 Great for storage and referencing purposes.
What are the advantages of digital
communication?
Are there any drawbacks to digital
communication?
 Can lack a personal touch
 Meaning can be misconstrued
 Official documents lack the permanence
of a signature
 There are new security threats
associated with digital communication
 Participants need learn the rules of
digital communication AKA “Netiquette”
What should teachers know before using
digital communication?
 Students and teachers must understand and abide
by the rules of digital communication
 It is the teachers responsibility to educate inform
the students of the rules
What are some of the pit-falls that teachers
face while using digital communication?
 Always separate your classroom digital media from you personal digital media
 Always posts appropriately on ALL accounts.
 Always explain expectations to students
 Always keep posts and comments positive
 Always address problems with individual students quickly and directly
 Always regulate your privacy settings
 Always protect your passwords
 Never Friend students on Facebook or other personal accounts
 Never be disrespectful in your posts
 Never discipline a student on a public forum
 Never allow anyone access to your accounts
 Never post when angry or upset
