      1. REVIEW OF COMMUNICATION SIGNALS AND SYSTEMS                                                     [6 hrs]

      Analytical representation of band passes signals and noise, signal space representation,
      representation of digitally modulated signals, spectral characteristics of digital modulation.

      2. PROBABILITY AND STOCHASTIC PROCESS                                                              [5 hrs]



      Functions of random variables, statistical averages of random variables, some useful probability
      distributions and their moments, power density spectrum, response of LTI system to random process.



      3. INFORMATION THEORY AND SOURCE CODING                                                            [5 hrs]

      Measure of information, entropy, mutual information, Shanon-Fano theorem, Huffman coding, LZW
      coding, lossy coding, transform domain coding

      4. AWGN CHANNELS, MODULATION AND DEMODULATION                                                      [6 hrs]

      Demodulation and detection of digital signals, matched filter demodulator, correlator demodulator,
      probability of error for M- ary modulation, Viterbi decoding

      5. CHANNEL CAPACITY AND INFORMATION TRANSMISSION                                                   [6 hrs]

      Shanon’s channel capacity theorem, orthogonal and non-orthogonal cases of modulation, power,
      bandwidth, rate tradeoff, Nyquist rate of transmission, raised cosine channels

      6. CHANNEL CODING TECHNIQUES                                                                       [8 hrs]



      Hamming weight and codes, linear block codes, cyclic codes, convolution codes, syndrome decoding,
      Trellis codes, turbo codes, coding rate and detection errors



      7. TOPICS OF MODERN COMMUNICATION                                                                 [12 hrs]

      OFDM and multicarrier communication, fading channels, spread spectrum communication, satellite
      communication, fibre optic communication, software defined radio.
