Defining Terms
Digital Technology
Any device of software that uses a
digital code. Digital code being the
conversion of media -
video, audio, images, or text - into a
binary code, which is a language made
up of 1s and 0s that when sequenced in
a particular way create a digital copy of
the media content. This code is
generated or unpacked by digital
devices such as a computer, a mobile
phone, television, camera, etc.
Internet
The infrastructure that allows the
transmission of
information, content, and digital code to
take place. It is a massive network of
servers, computers, transmission
lines, and wi-fi signals that allows our
computers and other internet-enabled
devices to communicate and share with
one another.
New Media
A broad term that encompasses the
changing nature of how media and
information is produced, consumed, and
shared among people and communities.
Thanks to digital technology, the new
media landscape makes it much more
affordable and accessible for ordinary
people to produce their own
content, distribute it widely and then
consume it in a much more social and/or
collaborative way (hence the term “social
media).
Netizen/Digital Activist
Individuals who use connected
technologies, the internet and digital
tools and leverage the new media
landscape to affect political and social
change.
How are nonviolent movements
using digital technology and the
            internet?
1. COMMUNICATING
2. MOBILIZING
3. ORGANIZING/COORDINATING

• Movements are using digital technology and the
  internet to communicate their own
stories, providing their own perspectives, and
cover events at the grassroots level, as opposed
to relying on commercial or government-run
media to capture that essence of the struggle.

Digital Tech, New Media, and the Internet in Nonviolent Struggle

Editor's Notes

  • #17: Definition of TermsWith the word “digital,” I am referring to the conversion of media content, be it video, audio, visuals, or text, into binary code, which is a sequence of 1s and 0s that can be generated or unpacked by a digital device, be it a computer, mobile phone, television, camera, etc.So this entire webinar experience is possible thanks to digital technology. The images on my screen and the sound of my voice are being converted into a binary code, which is then sent to your computer, where it is then unpacked, re-creating the images and my voice. This near instant sharing of information is available no other way than via digital technology.
  • #18: Definition of termsWith the phrase, “online world,” I am referring to the increased connection of peoples, institutions, and organizations through the internet and the various forms of new media and online social platforms that help facilitate these connections. So those are the concepts that’ll I will be touching referring to throughout the webinar.
