As an Anglican school, we recognise that spirituality is an important aspect of our students’ learning and well being. Students participate in regular Chapel services and Religious Studies classes. Our restorative practices give students ethical and moral foundation for making good decisions throughout their lives. COMMUNITY When your daughter enrols at our School, we welcome your whole family into the Diocesan community. It is part of our philosophy that a stable, collegial community As parents, you are always welcome to come and discuss your daughter’s progress and we will always take the time to address any of your concerns. We welcome families of all faiths to join our School and approach to your child’s learning and future. In our Community Service Programme, students complete a range of community services. The International Baccalaureate Diploma also has a service component. Networks such as our Old Girls’ League and Parents & Friends’ Association foster friendships and give parents, belonging to the ‘Dio’ community. The Heritage Foundation, Dio Arts and The Sports Foundation are also important parts of the School’s extended community. Pastoral care is an integral part of the high quality learning environment we provide. It is important for all of our students to settle well into school life and feel part of a giving community where they are stable, secure and make lasting friendships. Our concept of service starts in the classroom with teachers who are warm, effective and respectful communicators with your daughter’s personal welfare at heart. The pastoral care network at Diocesan also includes counselling, health and chaplaincy services as well as careers advice and personalised tutoring to address students’ needs appropriately. In our Buddy and Peer Support Programmes, Year 12 and 13 students work with Year, 7, 8 and 9 students. They familiarise younger students with school structures and facilities, and being a ‘special older friend’ helps our new girls, and their parents, to quickly feel at ease. E D U C AT I N G H E A R T S A N D M I N D S the onejunior high A NEW WORLD IN YEARS 7 TO 10 At Diocesan School for Girls we recognise that moving from Junior School to Junior High is a big step for your daughter as she becomes a young adult. The curriculum at Diocesan supports our philosophy of educating hearts and minds; therefore our Year 7 to 10 Curriculum caters for your daughter’s academic and personal development as she works through the challenging issues of adolescence. When you send your daughter to our school, you entrust us with her care, her education and her future. It’s a role we cherish and take very seriously. This booklet is an overview of the wonderful choices, opportunities and support available to girls entering Diocesan Junior High. TRANSITIONING At Diocesan we have the structure in place to ensure that your daughter gets all the support and encouragement she needs to make this transition easy and enjoyable. of belonging to the Dio community. The School achieves this using the Buddy and Peer Support programmes, which foster strong links between older and younger students. These programmes are based on the principle that at every level and in every age group in society, people absorb information and values from one another. Buddy and Peer Support Programmes Every new student is paired up with a buddy within their Tutor Group. All Year 7, Year 9, and new Year 8 students also have a Year 12 or Year 13 student; who will be their friend and mentor as they settle into Junior High. All new Year 7, 8 and 9 students and their parents meet school year. The programmes are overseen by the year Dean, Tutor Group Teacher, School Counsellors and the Pastoral Care team. ACADEMIC CURRICULUM The academic curriculum at Junior High School not only consolidates the basics that your daughter has learnt so far, but also introduces a more diverse curriculum which challenges her investigative learning and thinking. Specialist subject teachers from Year 7 onwards ensure that she receives the best teaching delivery and academic support. SUBJECT CHOICES The core academic subjects are Arts (Music, Drama, Visual Arts), Digital Learning, English, Health and Physical Education, Humanities (Social Studies), Languages, Mathematics, Technology (Food, Fabric, Materials), Science and Religious Studies. In Year 10, students choose three options as well as their core subjects. Two key points are: Information Technology Diocesan is committed to laptop supported learning to ensure that students develop effective research strategies. Year 7 students learn Keyboard and Word Processing Skills. Year 8 students purchase their own laptop computer to assist and enhance their learning - computer programming is a core component of the Year 8 and 9 IT curriculum. In Year 10 the girls have the option to study Multimedia,enhancing their communication, evaluation, analysis and creative skills. In 2008 we introduced the Digital Learning Lab. This highly successful project-based course gives student the opportunity to explore a wide range of digital technologies within a series of authentic learning opportunities. Languages In Year 7 students have a wide range of language options including French, German, Latin, Japanese, Spanish and Te Reo Ma-ori. At the end of the year students choose two languages that they will continue to study in Years 8 and 9. In Year 10, all students are required to continue studying at least one language.
