1.1 Intoroduction:
Directories can be institutional providing information regarding the name, structure,
function, objectives, operational activities, addresses, officers,members, etc. of various
types of institutions. There are directories of persons, which cover information about the
name, address, status, academic qualifications, profession, experience, affiliations, etc. of
individuals. The entries in the directory are systematically arranged in alphabetical or
classified order. The term „directory is also used for a list of events, newspapers,
periodicals and so on. They vary in kind, scope, purpose and size.
The present directory provide information about the students they are studying and
also old students of Dept. of Library and Information science, Gulbarga University
Gulbarga.in the form of their name, address, E-mail ID, Edn. qualifications, hobbies, goal
and etc on the basis of prepared a profiles and taken from particular students..
1.2 Statement of the Problem:
“Creation of the Directory on L.I.Sc. Students of Gulbarga University Gulbarga”
1.3 Need for the Study:
Education is an play an important role in human life as a without education man
life not moving successfully. Therefore knowledge is power. At modern age education
means provide an new information to society, citizens, nation.
Information collection, selection, analysis, storage, consolidation and
dissemination work highly done by the library and information professionals. So
librarians job very responsible, very need, service oriented.
This professionals or learners are touch with them because shared their
experiences, problems, achievements, information about the discipline of library and
information science. This performance highly done by directories. The directory deals
with the each one of the members profile and complete address with the contact number.
This information helpful to everyone for contact anywhere, everywhere. By using this
directory contact with nearly four batches students who are studying at present and also
old students and also some registered research scholars in the Dept. of L.I.Sc. At G.U.G.
for when will be conduct or organize seminars, conferences and workshops etc. about this
discipline.
Therefore this project work highly helpful to every one member in the field of
Library and Information Science both professionals and personal contact to each one of
them.
1.4 Aims and Objectives:
 The basic objective of this study is to provide complete information about the
L.I.Sc. Students in the form of directory.

 Anybody can use this directory to helpful for to connect our L.I.Sc. students.
 It helps to know about the students they are studied, studying in the dept. of
L.I.Sc.
 It‟s providing information about research scholars they are registered under the
guidance of L.I.Sc. Professors.
 It‟s user friendly and easy to access information.
 It‟s helps to know about present situations of L.I.Sc. Dept. in GUG.
 Major purpose is conducting any seminars, workshops of L.I.Sc. profession as
well as make a touch with them.
 It is one of the guiding tools of our Dept.
 It‟s helps to share the information resources and make a exchange of new
information etc.
1.5 Scope and Limitations:
This study is confirmed to the knowing about the Students and Research Scholars
they are studying in the Dept. of Library and Information Science, Gulbarga University
Gulbarga.
This study covers selected old students, present students and research scholars.
This directory have been prepared based on full details in the form of Name, father name,
academic background, permanent address, hobbies and goals etc.
1.6 Methodology:
The topic compilation of directory on L.I.Sc. Students at Gulbarga University
Gulbarga were select in consultation with the guide. The problem was analyzed in detail
and the search strategy was developed to gathering required from GUG websites.
There are several techniques used for collecting information from the users such
as observation, profile collecting etc. It is dedicated to consulted the library documents
availability in GUG library as well as giving information through internet especially web
sources of our topic of directories.
1.7 Arrangement:
This study arrangement of the directory has preparing systematically after
selected the students and scholars profiles. So, alphabetically arrangement of each one
students detail in the form of name, father name, address and educational status etc. And
all students categorized under year wise based on their academic year.

Chapter 1:
This chapter deals with statement of the problem, aims and objectives,
scope, methodology, arrangement and chapterisation.
Chapter 2:
This chapter provides a brief introduction and its fundamental
information about Directory, Gulbarga University, Library, Dept of Library
and Information Science with its special features.
Chapter 3:
This chapter provides brief profiles Research Scholars in the field of
Library and Information Science. They are presently registered under GUG.
and also provides information about past and present students of Library and
Information Science in GUG.
Chapter 4:
A brief summary of data collected from Students, Research Scholars
reguarding about present situation of Dept of Library and Information
Science, Gulbarga University Gulbarga.

2.1 Directories : An Overview.
Introduction;
Today‟s age is of organizations, societies and academies. Many organizations of
social, educational, industrial, scientific and technologicxal known have been established.
Sociotal growth and human involuement with these organizations necessitates the
compilation of, a sort of document where in information in a condensed and synthesiged
manner would be quite helpful to locate the address, designations, activities, publications,
productions etc at that time of need such situations have necessitated the production of
directories, which way vary in kinds, sizes and purposes. It may access as a separate
publication or as a part of another publication amongst the most sought after reference
sources directories are the single largest group, several thousands of directories are
published every year, undoubtedly they form a rich sources of information.
Meaning:
Mid-15c. (adj.), from L. directorius; as a noun, 1540s, from M.L. directorium,
noun use of neut. of directorius, from directus.
Meaning "alphabetical listing of inhabitants of a region" is from 1732; listing of
telephone numbers is from 1908.

Definitions:
“ A Directories is ,in fact “ any work which enables the searches to locate industry or
obtain further information about a person or organizations or which provides the
searcher with the list of persons or organizations in a particular industry, trade or group,
or in a particular place.”
“A Directory is a list of persons or organization systematically arranged usually in an
alphabetical or classed order, giving addresses, affiliations etc. for individuals and
addresses, offices, functions and similar data for organizations.”

Scope and purposes:
The scope of the directories must be wide, even if it may serve specific purposes.
The directories of academies, science societies, professions, trade, associations etc. will
be restricted to needs of those communities, they are the basic sources of names and
addresses list of office bearers, members, their qualifications, detailed meeting etc. Even
through encyclopedia and yearbooks offer some information for quick reference,
directories are indispensable sources.
The most important purposes served by directory is its limited and orderly
presentation of the information usually needed by a user. Though they have no definite
periodicity of appearance directories remain complete and offer satisfaction to the
members of the library.
One cannot therefore underestimate the value and scope of directories. The value
of a directory increases with the orderliness and systematic organization of its material.
They fill the knowledge and communication gap among people. Germany is usually
acclaimed as a nation which educated its citizens with the help of a variety of directories.
Hence it may be said that because the directories are intimately concern with the
human beings and their organizations they serve almost at the imagination can bring bear
in data.
 History:
The idea of directory has a respectable ambiguity since the beginning of recorded
knowledge, man has been feeling the need to prepare an orderly list of people their
organizations are things; as a result of good number of such ready reference sources are
produced time and again.
Directory in the conventional form may be traced back to 1732. When Brown‟s
directory or list of principle traders in London was first published. Since the several
thousands of directories has been published to suit the requirement of specific types of
information.
 Uses of Directories:
 Used to locate persons address, telephone number.
 Knowing who is who.
 Used to locate organization.
 Used to online directories.
 Used to our require information to search.

 Importance of directory:
Directories are very useful to locate answers to agency or bibliographical queries
as they cover information about organizations and their members, as well as notable
personalities in various fields in the world. They include:
 List of organizations or persons arranged systematically in alphabetical or
classified order.
 Names and address of organizations and persons including their telephone
numbers, fax numbers, telegraphic and telex address.
 Functions, Objectives and activities of organizations.
 List of bearers and members, their official and residential address,
designation, qualification, working experience, achievements, publications.
etc.
TYPES OF DIRECTORIES:
 General Directories
General directories are further divided into two groups:
 Topographical Directories of Cities and Towns etc.
 Telephonic, Telegraphic and Telex Directories

 b) Special Directories
 Special directories can be international, national, or local in coverage. They are
divided into three main groups:
 Institutional Directories
 Professional Directories
 Trade and Business Directories
General Evaluation of Directory:
Authority:
 1.Authorship. What are the qualifications in experience and education of the
author, authors, contributors, and editors by reputation and as revealed in previous
works?
 2.Auspices. What is the reputation of the publisher or the sponsoring agency?
 3.Genealogy. Is the work new? If it is based on previous publication, what is the
extent of the revision?
 4.The authoritativeness of the ready reference sources can usually be assessed on the
basis of the reputation, credibility, experience and educational qualifications of the
publishers, compilers, and editors. The sources should be up-to-date, accurate and
reliable
Scope:
 5. Purpose. To what extent is the statement of purpose in the preface fulfilled in
the text?
 6. Coverage. What is the range of subject matter and what are the limitations?
 7. Regency. How up to date is the material?
 8. Bibliographies. To what extent do the bibliographies indicate scholarship and
send the user on to additional information?
 9. The scope of the work can be-judged from its purpose stated in the preface and
introduction: The scope of this variety of ready reference sources differs from eageneral
or restricted to a specific language, subject or area. Their coverage can be comprehensive
or selective, current or retrospective, international, national, regional or local, pertaining
to a subject or a profession, etc.

Treatment:
 10. Accuracy. How thorough, reliable and complete are the facts?
 11. Objectivity. Is there any bias in controversial issues? How balanced is the
space given one subject as compared with others of equal importance?
 12. Style. Is the writing level that of the layman or the scholar, adult, or child?
How readable is the work?
 13. The serial ready reference source published at regular intervals should be checked for
their up-to-datedness, accuracy, thoroughness, reliability, simplicity and objectivity. The
style of two groups of advances and subject handbooks should be scholarly where as
manuals and practical handbooks should be simple and popular.
Arrangement:
 14. Sequence. Does the sequence of content follow classified, chronologic,
geographic, tabular or alphabetic order? If alphabetic, are the topics large or
small?
 15. Indexing. Is the main text arrangement adequately complemented by indexes
and cross references.
Format:
 16. Physical make-up. Do binding, paper, type, and layout meet minimum
specifications?
 17. Illustrations. Are the illustrations of good quality, are they of real
significance and are they directly related to the text
 18. The value of the format can be determined by verifying the following aspects of the
ready reference sources.
 19. Size: Ready reference sources are usually single volume tools. Some handbooks are
avail-able in multi volumes. They should be handy.
 20. Typography: The size and style of the type faces should be clear and legible. The
proper spacing between the letters, words and lines and layout of the columns improve
the readability of the sources. The distinct difference between the headings and sub-
headings by using the bold letters or different sizes of the letters facilitate the usability of
the sources.

 21. Paper: Good quality papers should be used for durability. Thin and opaque papers
reduce the weight and make the size of the source handy.
 22. Binding: Binding should be of leather, rexin or calico cover and should be light but
strong enough to withstand heavy and rough use.
 23. Physical Appearance: The physical get up and appearance should be appealing,
functional and pleasing with golden or ink print lettering.
Special features:
 24. Distinction. What features distinguish this information source (reference
book) from all others?
 25. Comparative values. How does the work compare to similar titles? Reviews:
are they favorable?
 26. Most ready reference sources are of specific frequency i.e. annual, biennial, or
published at specific or irregular interval. They are referred to answer factual and trend
questions. So, by their very nature, they become out of date soon after the latest editions
are published. It is necessary therefore, to check them for the special criteria.
 27. Regency: As ready reference sources are referred to locate information on dates,
events, persons, organizations or specific subject, they should be checked for recency.
Some few well-known events, changes in addresses, recruitment of eminent scholars,
important dates, inventions or notable achievements of the previous year are included or
not.
 28. Brevity: Since most of these sources are browsed through to enhance general
knowledge, the information should be available in brief, pinpointed, factual form which
are easy to locate and remember. The long descriptive articles are meant for serious
study.
 29. Trends in Development: They should indicate trends in development. One should be
able to see the continuity in development over the years whether it is scientific advances,
sociological research, political events, personalities or organizations.
 30. Methods of Compilation: They are varied types and are different in their nature,
scope and coverage. Hence, one has to look for the method used for its compilation. The
data may be collected from the primary or secondary source. Sometimes either census or
survey method is used for compilation.
Indexes:
The whole purpose of ready reference source is defeated, if the user is not able to locate
the required information easily and quickly. Thus, it is necessary to have detailed, exhaustive
indexes - chronological, alphabetical, classified and geographical having cross reference of

`see ' and `see also' and additional keys or citations. These will provide guidance to interested
readers to locate the information and also assist them to refer the primary sources if they want
more details.
Bibliographies:
The references and bibliographies given at the end of the articles in hand-books are very
useful to the subject specialists for further reference. As they are secondary or sometimes even
tertiary sources, the references will help them to refer to the primary sources for more information
and authoritative data.
The above checkpoints are very useful to judge the value of any ready reference source
before adding it to the collection. The thorough scrutinization of these tools in the light of the
above guidelines makes the reference librarian familiar with the sources and information
available in them.

Gulbarga University was established in 1980 by an Act of Karnataka State. Its
jurisdiction extends to the five districts of Gulbarga, Bidar, Raichur, Bellary and Koppal
of Hyderabad Karnataka. Earlier it was a post-graduate centre of Karnatak University,
Dharwad since 1970. The main campus is situated on a 860 acres of land, 6 kilo meters
east of Gulbarga city. It has 38 post-graduate departments and 4 post-graduate centres
located at Krishnadevarayanagar, Bellary, Raichur and Bidar. Another post-graduate
centre at Basavakalyan is on the anvil. The University enrols about 3500 students every
year for various post-graduate, M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes in various disciplines.
There are about 160 faculty members and about 700 technical and non-technical
supporting staff. There are `305 colleges affiliated to this University which enrol
graduate/diploma courses in arts, fine arts, music, social sciences, science & technology,
commerce, education and law.
The Logo Statement "Vidyeye Amrutha" translates as “Education is Nector‟‟ and
conveys the spirit of Gulbarga University which is catering to the needs of Hyderabad –
Karnataka region. The starting of this University comes to our people as “Nector”. Hence

The role of libraries in providing widespread and inclusive access to knowledge is
widely acknowledged. In today‟s context, libraries have to play two distinct roles - to
serve as a local centre of information and knowledge, and be a local gateway to national
and global knowledge. Some of the issues under consideration of National Knowledge
Commission are:
 institutional framework of libraries;
 networking;
 education, training and research;

Modernization and Computerization of Libraries;
 maintenance of private and personal collections and
 staff requirements to meet changing needs.
This commission has recommended the formation for the National Library Commission
to strengthen the Library networks in India. The Department of Culture (DoC) has
proposed setting up a National Mission for Libraries (NML) as a Central Sector Scheme.
The NML will cover libraries under the DoC and the activities under it will include:
National Census of Libraries; Modernisation including networking of Libraries under
DoC; establishing Knowledge Centres and Digital Libraries. Recently under National
Mission for Libraries there is a proposal for establishing 7000 libraries having computers
with internet facility across the country.
It was recommended that the initial recruitment should be direct at the level of library and
Information Assistant. The qualification requirement would be graduation and BLISc
degree.
Thus, the scope of librarianship becomes brighter. Career in LIS is multidimensional,
ever growing bright and significantly enriching the knowledge base of the society for
prosperity and progress.

Course nomenclature and qualifying marks in different courses differ from university to
university. Earlier the subject was called library science but now due to information
explosion professionals handle information. So library science is changing into
information science. A few universities have incorporated this word in the course name
but not removed the word library. So some universities provide degree i.e. Bachelor in
library and Information Science(BLISC), and Masters in Library and information Science
(MLISC), M.Phil in Library and Information science and Ph.D in Library and
Information Science and some provide degrees like Bachelor in library Science(B.LIB),
and Master in Library Science (M.LIB), M.Phil in Library and Information science and
Ph.D in Library Science.

The computer and information technology is now being widely used in libraries and
information centers to process, store, retrieve and disseminate information. NISCAIR
under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi conducts a
two-year programme leading to the award of Associateship in Information Science (AIS)
and the Documentations Research and Training Centre (DRTC) at the Indian Statistical
Institute (Bangalore) offer Associateship in Documentation and Information Science
(ADIS).This award is also recognised as equivalent to MLISc degree. These two courses
enjoy a good reputation in the employment market. In view of the increasing use of
computer and information technology in libraries, several universities in India also have
started various courses focusing primarily on information technology and computer.
