This dissertation examines the musical genre of "underground folklore" in Romania. The genre was coined by the hip hop band Subcarpați and blends modern genres like hip hop with Romanian folklore motifs. The dissertation explores the origins and sound of underground folklore. It analyzes how Subcarpați was inspired by folklore traditions the founder heard as a child in Dolhasca, Moldova. The genre represents a fusion of these rural folk traditions with hip hop styles. The dissertation aims to understand underground folklore as a reflection of dual relationships in Romanian society between urban and rural, new and old, and modern and traditional influences.
