- 2. OBJECTIVES Describe the motion of an object in terms of distance or displacement, speed or velocity, and acceleration.
- 4. In science, movement is referred as to motion.
- 5. MOTION It is the change in position over a particular time interval with respect to a point and frame of reference.
- 6. As it changes its position, a distance is covered and a direction is taken.
- 7. ACTIVITY 1. MY ROAD MAP Suppose you are to invite your new classmates to your house for your birthday party. But sadly, your friends are not familiar with your location. To help them locate your home, draw a map from your home to school. Include labels and landmarks and apply colors for easy reading and tracking. Use black broken lines to trace the path from home to the destination. Draw a red straight arrow to trace the direction from the house to the school.

How is distance demonstrated in the map you have drawn? 4. What do you think is the difference between distance and displacement?

- 11. Physical Quantities It is a property of a material or system that can be quantified by measurement. It can be characterized as either scalar or vector.
- 12. Scalar Quantity It has only magnitude but no direction.
- 13. Vector Quantity Has both magnitude and direction.
- 14. Distance (d) It is a scalar quantity that refers to the total length of path travelled by an object.
- 15. Displacement () It is a vector quantity that describes the shortest distance between the initial position and the final position of an object, plus the direction in which the object is moving.
- 16. The units for both distance and displacement are millimeters, centimeters, decimeters, kilometers (Metric System) or inches, yards, feet, and miles (English System).
