Django camera work
- 1. This over the shoulder shot is effective because it gives us the perspective of the conditions the slaves have been walking through. The bare, rocky, desert type scenery is shown behind the shoulders of the slaves. It also allows us to see how the slaves have been treated, as we can see whip marks on the back of the slaves, which shows they were very poorly treated. This simple use of camera work can make the audience have sense of exactly what this fil is going to be about, and already start to feel sorry for them.
- 2. This mid shot of the characters is very effective because it allows us to see the facial expressions of the slaves. We can see the exhaustion and pain they are going through. Also as we can see they have no tops on, this tells us they been suffering through the different conditions whilst walking. The effect this has on the audience is that this is a very tough time to be living on, and shows how poorly treated these men are.
- 3. This close up is effective because it shows how the character is grimacing. This could mean he is in serious pain, or is dreading what may happen to him in the future. It also allows us to clearly see how he is feeling. The fact his facial hair is looking un cared for shows us he is not cared about at this time. This too also shows the audience the pain these individuals are going through, and can make many feel sorry for them. Even though this is how they were treated at this time.
- 4. This is extreme wide shot gives us a full view of the conditions these slaves are travelling through. It allows us to see the terrain they have to walk on, and shows the severity of the size of the surroundings compared to they are. We can also see how the owner of the slave is travelling on a horse, which shows how poorly treated slaves are. This gives the audience a much better understanding of both where they are coming from and how tough the conditions are.
- 5. This wide shot allows us to see the terrain that the slaves have been travelling on. And gives us a whole view of how far they have come. Which has the effect that they must be exhausted, and in a very poor state. The mountain type terrain shows how bad it truly is. This once again links to the audience knowledge on the conditions.
- 6. The medium wide shot shows us the body language of the characters. We can see that they are struggling to walk as they are falling over from the exhausting when doing so. We can also see the blanket they have to keep them warm in the extreme cold conditions. We can also see the frost building up on the tree branches. The effect this gives on the audience is a gradual increase in feeling sorry for the characters, becausse the fact they are so poorly looked after, and almost being left to die.
