The Doctrine of Baptism – Part 2 What does the Bible say? Or
Scripture Text – Matthew 28:18-20 Mat 28:18-20 (18) And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. (19) Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: (20) Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Importance of a Formula In Chemistry, an incorrect or improper formula can be harmful and even a disaster. H 2 O = Water, which is healthy and sustains life. CH 2 O = Formaldehyde, which is undrinkable and even harmful in large amounts. CO = Carbon Monoxide, which is highly toxic and could kill you. Slight variations in the formula can be the difference between life and death. Formulas are also very important in the Bible. What is the way to heaven? How will we get there? Joh 14:6 (6) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life : no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
John's Baptism (was not formula under grace)‏ Acts 19:1-6 They were sincere people, who met up with Paul. Paul asked “Unto what then were you baptized?” They said, “Unto John's Baptism” John's Baptism was not good enough It was not the formula that Jesus established in the new covenant. They responded to Paul appropriately: (Act 19:5) When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
God's Baptismal Plan Jesus Command (Matthew 28:19)‏ (Mat 28:19) Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: There are few things to note: “ in the name” singular “ in the name” not in the titles “ in the name of” not just “in the name” This is in Possessive or Genitive Case
God's Baptismal Plan What Is The Singular Name? The Name of the Father (Joh 5:43) I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not.... The Name of the Son (Mat 1:21) And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. The Name of the Holy Ghost (Joh 14:26) But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name..... The Family Name (Eph 3:15) Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, The Only Name (Act 4:12) Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved .
God's Baptismal Plan Biblical Proof What plan did the Apostles use in obedience to Jesus? (Act 2:38) Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. (Act 8:16) (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus .)‏ (Act 10:48) And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord . Then prayed they him to tarry certain days. (Act 19:5) When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus . (Act 22:16) And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized , and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord . Clearly the Apostles were not confused, but understood it clearly. It is interesting that the book of Matthew was not written until approx. 60 A.D, which is 27 years after Jesus gave his command. The apostles had applied it in Jesus name for 27 years.
God's Baptismal Plan Historical Proof a. The Encyclopedia Britannica , “Everywhere in the oldest sources it is stated that baptism took place in the name of Jesus.” b. The Westminster Dictionary of Church History , “The Trinitarian formula did not emerge until the second century.” c. The Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible , “The evidence of Acts 2:38, 10:48 (cf. 8:16, 19:5), supported by Galatians 3:27, and Romans 6:3, suggest that baptism in early Christianity was administered, not in the three-fold name, but in the name of the Lord Jesus. d. The New International Standard Bible Encyclopedia , “No record of the Trinitarian formula can be discovered in the Acts of the Apostles. The baptisms recorded in the New Testament after the day of Pentecost are administered in the name of Jesus Christ. That this formula was the established usage in the Christian Church is proven by records of baptisms in Justin and Tertullian.” e. The Dictionary of the New Testament , “It is maintained that the formula at first ran in the name of the Lord Jesus.” f. Harpers Bible Dictionary , “The Trinitarian formula was a late addition.” g. Vines Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words , “The phrase baptizing them in the name would indicate that the baptized one was closely bound to or became the property of the one into whose name he was baptized.” h. The Theology of the New Testament , “There is the fact that from the very beginning, baptism undoubtedly was performed in the name of Jesus, i.e. with the pronouncing of the name and hence with the invocation of Jesus.”
Objections Answered 1) The thief on the cross was not baptized (Luk 23:43) And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise. Dispensations Innocence – Adam and Eve before sin. Conscience – From sin in the garden until the flood. Human Government – From the flood until the tower of Babel. Promise – From the tower of Babel until the Law was given. Law – From the giving of the Law to Moses until the death of Jesus on the cross. Grace – From Pentecost until now. The thief was under the same time frame as Moses. Was Moses required to be baptized in Jesus Name? No, he was not, and neither was the thief.
Objections Answered 2) The Philippian Jailer was only told to believe ‏ (Act 16:31) And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. Not – Saved at that very instant Because – Believing is the starting point in salvation. Because - “Thy House” would also be saved on the basis of the jailer faith. They were not even on the scene yet. But – Future tense “Thou shalt be saved” Salvation is a result of our response to our faith. I Peter 3:21 “Baptism doth also now save us ” Mark 16:16 “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved , but he that believeth not shall be damned.” The Jailer's and his Family's Response (Act 16:33) And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.
Objections Answered 3) We are Saved by Faith and not Works Eph 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith ; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: (9) Not of works, lest any man should boast. Note : It doesn't indicated that we are saved by faith or works, but by his grace. Faith takes us through the door to experience grace. James 2:17-20 (True Biblical Faith)‏ Verse 17 – Faith without works is dead. Verse 18 – Show my your faith without works and I will show you my faith by my works. Verse 19 – You believe in One God, that's good. Devil also believes. (Is he saved?)‏ The Chapter continues and talks about Abraham and Rahab and then: (James 2:24) Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and NOT by faith only.
Objections Answered 4) I'd Rather Obey Jesus Than Peter Matt 28:19 “....Baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost” Acts 2:38 “.... be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ....” Which one should we obey?  We can obey both in one action. Repeating Matthew 28:19 is not obedience, but repetition.  Obeying Acts 2:38 is obedience to Matthew 28:19. Peter...... Was given the keys to open the door to heaven for the world (Matt 16:19)‏ Was present for Jesus words in Matthew 28:19. Had his understanding opened by Jesus in Luke 24:25. Preached under the anointing of the Holy Ghost in Acts 2:38. He did not get it wrong..... Joh 17:20   Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also  which shall believe on me through their word;
It is a treasure in the field Discovered by hungry people. With eternal blessings
