The Dolphin
Story
Dolphin’s Appearance
• Dolphins have 1 dorsal fin like
a sharks, two flippers and a
tale called a fluke which is just
like a shark’s tail.
• Their skin is very smooth but
their skin is also very sensitive
so they can get hurt and
damaged easily.
• Believe it or not but they can
even be sunburned.
• They don’t have a nose but
instead have a blowhole which
allows them to breathe easier
when they come up for air
because dolphins need to
breathe air too.
• Dolphins also have ears,
only it’s not sticking out
like us humans but is a
tiny hole that allows them
to hear well.
• Color varies for each type
of dolphin which you’ll
read about in the next
slide but they mostly have
gray, white and black
coloring.
Types of Dolphins
• There are 33 types of dolphins
• 3 types: Marine dolphins, river dolphins, killer whales and porpoises.
• All dolphins range in size
• for example the Marine Dolphin Maui’s Dolphin is the smallest kind of
dolphin in the world. The killer whale is the largest type of dolphin in the
world.
• The marine dolphins are the most common dolphins seen in oceans and
at aquariums. They are different shades of grays and some grayish white
colors and dark gray colors.
• River Dolphins are found in salt water rivers. River dolphins are usually
light colored such as light blue, light gray, white and even silver.
• Porpoises are found in small groups in the oceans; as for their coloring
they pretty much are more of a coloring that’s not to dark and not to light
of browns, whites, grays and blacks.
.
Behavior of the dolphins
• Most of the time dolphins are very
friendly, playful, acrobatic and
intelligent.
• Dolphins are also very smart for
animals because they have the
mind most two year old humans
have.
• They have a closer relationship
with humans than most sea
creatures which is why dolphins
will protect humans if there are
sharks nearby
• Dolphins are mostly seen living
and traveling with groups of
dolphins.
A Dolphin’s Diet
• Dolphins eat a wide variety of
fish mostly Capelin and
Herring, squids and shrimp.
• Dolphins eat a lot of food,
adults eat 4% to 5% of their
body weight in food per day.
• Strangely dolphins don’t chew
their food but swallow it whole
• To get their food most dolphins
hunt in groups, yet they all eat
individually
On top, dolphin eating
fish. Below, dolphins
found something yummy
to eat
