RESEARCH PROGRAM Title : Comprehensive Support for Alzheimer's Disease Caregivers (R01 AG 022066) Dr. Gaugler's role: Principal Investigator Funding source: National Institutes of Health/National Institute on Aging Duration: 2005-2011 Specific Aims: 1) Testing the benefits of the New York University Caregiver Intervention for Alzheimer's caregivers at two sites: University of Minnesota and New York University; 2) Expanding the scope of the New York University Caregiver Intervention by focusing on adult child Alzheimer's caregivers.

RESEARCH PROGRAM Title : Adult Day Service Utilization and Outcomes: A Mixed Methods Approach (K02 AG 022066) Dr. Gaugler's role: Principal Investigator Funding source: National Institutes of Health/National Institute on Aging Duration: 2008-2013 Specific Aims: Qualitative: Identify respite-enhancing elements and therapeutic activities of adult day services (ADS) that improve outcomes Quantitative: Conduct a statewide survey of ADS programs and family caregivers to confirm what programmatic elements of ADS are linked to key outcomes Process evaluation: Develop and pilot an intervention that enhances ADS programs’ capability of improving client and family caregiver outcomes

RESEARCH PROGRAM Title : Caregiver Outcomes Post NH Placement of a Family Member (R21 AG 026525) Dr. Gaugler's role: Principal Investigator Funding source: National Institutes of Health/National Institute on Aging Duration: 2007-2009 Specific Aims: 1) Describe the pattern(s) of change in the degree of caregiver burden and depression after patients with dementia are permanently placed in a nursing home; 2) Determine which caregiver and patient factors prior to placement predict persistently high or increased levels of depression and burden after placement; 3) Develop and validate a prognostic index to identify caregivers at greatest risk of poor adaptation; and 4) Integrate the prognostic index created in the large-scale secondary analyses as a targeting tool in the development of a clinical intervention for dementia caregivers during institutionalization.

RESEARCH PROGRAM Title : The Memory Club: Providing Support to Persons with Early-Stage Alzheimer’s Disease and their Care Partners Dr. Gaugler's role: Principal Investigator Funding source: Office of Public Engagement, University of Minnesota; The Alzheimer’s Association Minnesota-North Dakota Regional Office; The Wilder Foundation Duration: 2007-2010 Specific Aims: 1) To analyze longitudinal data collected from the Memory Club to determine initial efficacy of a psychosocial program for early-stage Alzheimer’s patients and their family members.
