This chapter reviews literature on tools that can improve students' listening skills. It discusses theories of the listening process, which involves differentiating sounds, understanding vocabulary, grammar and meaning across three stages. The chapter also examines students' learning strategies, including cognitive, metacognitive and social strategies. Finally, it analyzes using video as a listening tool, finding that the visual elements in video can help interpretation and do not distract students, making video a suitable tool to support cognitive listening strategies.
