SL Oral:
‘draws on’
A guide to Criterion B1
& to doing good presentations
To start with, you respond – you study the image, and think what it says
… then you review – you think how about what you can say about the image
- in this case, how does it link to English culture?
… then you select – you pick those elements which support what you want to say
- your purpose is to link the image to English culture
If you ‘draw on' something, you select for a purpose:
“descriptions“ …
 Give a quick description of the image as a whole, and then…
 … concentrate on the bits which are important to you
… “personal interpretation" …
 … explain what you think the image is trying to express, and…
 … what you think about this meaning…
 … in relation to English culture
… “target culture”
Draw on what you know of English culture and society, based on…
 … what you have studied in class
 … (and perhaps) your general knowledge
‘What should I talk about?’
Approaches – try these…
‘Thesis’ ***
• a coherent argument
• developed in a methodical and organised way
• based on detailed description with interpretation
‘Point of view’ **
• a personal opinion
• developed and reasonably well organized
• based on description and interpretation
'Theme-based' description **
• the overall subject/meaning of the image,
• described methodically, with some interpretation
'Composition-based' description *
• the visual organisation of the image
• details are described simply, and perhaps with some interpretation
*** - the more stars, the more impressive for the examiners
Approaches – avoid this…
‘Digressions’ / ‘associations’
• random ideas suggested by the image, perhaps only vaguely relevant
• details are described in limited ways
• patchy coverage with little effective interpretation
• occasional random links to target culture
Support
'explicit details’
elements of the image that are evident and concrete, and so can be described
... e.g. "everyone in the picture is wearing green clothes“
'implicit details’
elements of the image not immediately apparent but which can be interpreted
... e.g. "the colour green is associated with St Patrick's Day in the US“
'links to the target culture(s)’
elements drawn from your background knowledge, relevant to interpreting the image
... e.g. "St Patrick's Day is a major festival in many US cities for the Irish imigrant
population, and this image seems to be of such a festival"
evident structure – “say what the structure is”
... a stated plan or 'map’
… clear, direct explanation of the overall argument
(e.g. #1 proposed thesis > #2 detailed reasoning > #3 thesis revisited/concluded)
effective articulation – “make sure that one idea leads to the next”
... use of cohesive devices
… step-by-step logic which link stages of the argument together
consistent coherence – “don’t wander off the point”
... the main thread of the argument is clear throughout
… without digression or irrelevance
