WARM UP
Which Internet browser do
you usually use?
Which browser did you use
Vocabulary
Here’s a story of a man who developed his own Internet browser. Why do you
think he did that?
Hey friends,
Last month, I finally launched the new version of Sizzy, a full-fledged browser for
designers and developers.
I made a lot of mistakes and I learned a lot of lessons, so I wanted to share the entire
story with you.
When I first started working on this project, my main motivation was solving my own
problem.
I worked as a freelance web developer a few years ago and previewing a website on
multiple devices was a major pain in the ass for me. The client wanted the app to
work perfectly on every device, in every orientation. So I coded up a web app that
significantly simplified this process.
Vocabulary
After only a day of work, I already saved myself a lot of time while working for clients
in the future. I published the app and I open-sourced it on GitHub so that everyone
could use it and contribute. People loved it. The project received 5k stars.
“Great”, I thought to myself, “so many people are using the app, they will start
donating soon.” But no one gave me any money. Here’s the thing. I didn’t take into
account that if you give something away for free, people don’t have motivation to
pay for it.
I realized that I needed to come up with a clever strategy to brand, promote and
monetize my product. All of that required a lot of time and I was so busy with other
things that I decided to put the Sizzy project off until better time.
Questions
Why did the developer
decide to create his own
browser?
What mistake did he make?
Vocabulary
Last summer I tried using the app again and my first reaction was “omfg why do people even
use this thing, it can be so much better”. I immediately wanted to improve the app. The
problem was, I had no idea how to move the project forward.
Long story short, I reworked a lot of things from scratch and turned Sizzy into an actual
web browser. There were some issues with integrating the payment system which set the
project back a couple of weeks but we shipped it! There were a few haters telling me that
my product shouldn’t be subscription-based or that it should even be available for free.
This is obviously ridiculous. My goal is to provide top-level customer service and grow my
product and for that, my business needs money.
Conclusion:
★ Solve your own problem
★ Show your solution to other people as soon as possible
★ Package it and distribute it as soon as possible
★ Don’t be scared, ashamed, or discouraged to make it paid
★ Don’t let anyone tell you how much you should charge for your work
Questions
1. Are you interested in Sizzy? Do
you think it could be useful for you?
2. What is your opinion on free vs
paid software? Do you agree with
the author of the article or the
haters?

Soft skills
Small talk
Let’s talk business (not small talk)
So, how was your weekend? (small
talk)
What is small talk?
Do you see small talk as a
waste of time or something
useful?
Soft skills
Small talk
1) “Warm up” the person you are talking to
and prepare for a more serious discussion
(before a business meeting or interview)
2) Avoid awkward silence
Small talk is very important in the American
culture. Americans are not comfortable with
long silences and try to establish a
“friendly” and positive connection with
everyone they meet.
They also have a lot of small talk based
party games where people ask and answer
questions to learn more about each other.
Practice
Pick any 2 topics from the list and come up with 2-3
questions to ask your peers. The goal is to have a
natural conversation. Feel free to ask follow-up
questions to get more information.
Example:
Topic: Food
Question: What is your favorite snack?
Topics:
Food Travel
Work Personal projects
Habits Pets
Childhood Sports
Shopping Books
HW
Imagine that you decided to
start a diary. Describe all of
the major things you did
yesterday. Feel free to
include your thoughts and
observations about how your
day went. Be as detailed as
possible.
That’s a wrap!
