I did not always want to be a Social Worker. I wanted to be a psychologist when I graduated high

The work I chose for my Independent Reading was the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. I desired
to read this book for quite some time but was adamant about reading it, purely because I did not want
to engage in such a well known classic. Throughout my time hearing about Frankenstein, I have
become brainwashed into believing that the Monster Frankenstein had created was nothing more than
a mere brainless creatures bent on destruction. I approached this novel with that mindset. Just a little
while ago, while researching the Philosopher s Stone and the Elixir of Life for methods to bring these
two ideas into reality (the latter more than the former), I came across a brief mention of this novel,

I immediately sought the book out. Once I began the book I realized that it was unputdownable, so
much so that I immersed myself for countless hours through the night and well into the next morning
reading this novel from cover to cover. Once I did put the book down I was drenched in a moment of
anger and admiration, both steaming from the overall plot and characters of the novel and the
figurative concept that protruded between the lines.
Primary, classifying this novel in one of Christopher Booker s The Seven Basic Plots was undoubtedly
a challenge. The challenge began when I realized how the story was told. It was not merely an
intellectual summary of events told as a story by Victor Frankenstein. It was a story, recorded by a
sailor named Robert Walton, and told via letters to his beloved sister Margaret
