The first step is to get into the EBSCOhost site 1. Type the URL http://search.ebscohost.com on the URL box 2. Next, enter username and password and click “Login” EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 2 1
3. Choose EBSCOhost SEARCH Engine EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 3
*Choose from the available database where EBSCO will get articles from 4. For nursing research, recommended database are Academic Search Complete and CINAHL 5. For education-related research, ERIC should also be used EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 4 4 5
*Other database to consider: 6. MAS Ultra- High school-related articles 7. Primary Search – Elementary-related articles 8. Professional Development Collection – Education Journals for professional educators EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 6 7 8
9. When you’re done choosing your database, click “continue” * take note that selecting all database will result in a slow search and irrelevant results EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 9
You can opt to use the 10. Search Options or 11. Results Limiting Options before doing a search *Personally, I prefer to use the limiting options after the search EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 11 10
12. When doing a basic search, type in the keywords into the search box. This is similar to a basic Google or Yahoo search 13. Then hit “search”. For this example, I put in “water quality” and “waterborne diseases” *I usually use basic search initially until I get several combination of keywords. Then I use advanced search EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 12 13
14. When using advanced search, you can use Boolean terms (AND, OR, NOT) to make a more accurate search. 15. You can even specify fields which should contain the keywords * same source and limit options apply EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 15 14
16. Using basic search, EBSCO came up with 1542226 results (that’s 1.5 Million!) 17. These results include abstract and full text articles, with the oldest dating back to 1865. Maybe Florence Nightingale’s? But Nightingale’s theory is available in more current sources so it’s not necessary to go back that far. EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 16 17
Now it’s time to put those limit options to use. 18. First, let’s limit results to full text articles only (abstracts are not allowed!) 19. Next, limit publication date to 2005-2011 If literature 5years old is limited, then we can take it a little further back. 20. Click “Update” EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 18 19 20
Next, limit the source type. 21. Click on “show me” to see all source types. Limit source type according to what is needed for the research. 22, Typically, most used source types are (but not limited to) books, periodicals and dissertations. EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 22 21
23. There are several more ways to limit search results EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 23
24. After all the limiters, there’s 301 results 25. These results were limited to full text articles published between 2005-2011 26. It’s also limited by age 27. by major headings (specific diseases and water characteristics) 28. and by sample/ subject (male/ female children) EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 24 26 27 25 28
29. Placing the cursor on the magnifying glass after the title gives you a quick view of the details of the article 30. To see detailed records of each result, click on the title. EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 29 30
The detailed record includes: 31. citation details 32. keywords 33. abstract or summary EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 31 32 31 33
34. Some results will have a link to a full text format (HTML) which can be viewed online 35. Some will only have a PDF file which needs to be downloaded to be viewed. EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 35 34
36. To download the PDF file, click on the “PDF Text”. This is recommended if your using your own computer since you can save it directly into your computer 37. If you feel that this article contains data that you want, you may choose to search for articles with similar data by clicking on the “Find Similar Results” EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 37 36
38. Now we’re back to 2.4M results. 39. Take note that when you do this, the limiters returns to their default settings so you have to set the limits again EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 38 39
40. On the right side of the detailed record are several tools EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 40
41. It will tell you when you have added an article to your folder 42. A list of all the articles you have added to your folder EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 42 41
43. You need to sign in before you can add items to your folder. *Take note that if you log out or accidentally leave EBSCO, or if you close the window, items in your folder will be lost. EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 43
44. You can email individual articles or all the items in your folders to several recipients. 45. You can set the citation format to APA (since this is what you will use for your reference) 46. Choose “Rich text Format” so that it can be editable using different word processors/ applications EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 45 44 46
There are different formats for citation and referencing. 47. For Nursing research, the APA format is preferred. Same is true with FEU EBSCO Basics Created by: Created for: Barbara Michelle B. de Guzman, RN, MSN Far Eastern University (IN) 47
