How Do We Learn?

Tell me, I’ll forget
Show me, I’ll remember
Involve me, I’ll understand
WE REMEMBER…
10% of what we read
20% of what we hear
30% of what we see
50% of what we see and hear
70% of what we discuss with others
80% of what we personally
   experience
95% or what we teach others

• The Action-Attitude Principle: believe what they
do more than they do what they believe
• The Agatha Christie Principle: motivated to
learn when the answer is not obvious
• The Concrete Principle: learn better when the
  focus is on the concrete
“Teaching the Bible Creatively”
     McNabb & Mabry
• The Travel Agent Principle: learn better when
they help to choose what they study
• The Emoi Hellenike Estin Principle: learn better
when they translate terms into own language

• The Who Cares Principle: learn better from
  teachers who care about them
• Putting It All Together: learn more when their

“Seven Laws of Teaching”
     John Milton Gregory
• A teacher must be one who knows the truth to be taught
• A learner is one who attends with interest to the lesson
• The language used as a medium between teacher and
learner must be common to both
• The lesson to be mastered must be explained in terms of
truth already known by the learner – the unknown must be
explained by means of the known
• Teaching is arousing and using the pupil’s mind
  to grasp the desired thought
• Learning is thinking into one’s own understanding
a new idea, habit or skill.
• The test and proof of teaching done must be
  reviewing, rethinking, reknowing, reproducing
and the applying of the material.
“The 7 Laws of The Teacher”
     Howard Hendricks
• The Law of the Teacher: if you stop growing today, you stop
  teaching tomorrow.
• The Law of Education: the way people learn determines
  how you teach.
• The Law of Activity: Maximum learning is always the result of
  maximum involvement.
• The Law of Communication: To truly impart
information requires the building of bridges.
• The Law of the Heart: teaching is not head to
head, it is heart to heart.
• The Law of Encouragement: it is most effective
when the learner is properly motivated.
• The Law of Readiness: learning is most effective
when both student and teacher are prepared.
