Introduction
“The history of drama stretches back to some of mankind's earliest civilizations. It's always fun to
learn the history of a play that you're watching. You could be seeing something that people have
enjoyed for hundreds or thousands of years. Drama as we know it got its start back in ancient Greece.
Many of the plays written during the Classical period, from 525 BC to 385 BC, are still performed
today”

1. To examine the similarities and differences between Eastern and Western civilizations.
2. To show basic skills on enquiry, investigation, application and presentation of relevant

Tasks
Part I : Your task is to propose a play in video format from a specific civilization. You are to select an event for
the play based on themes such as sociology, engineering, archaeology or myth and legends of the civilization.
You are to conduct a thorough research of the characteristics of the events chosen and perform the findings to
the class in any form of presentations deemed best.
Part II: Individually, your task is to create a journal of your character that would demonstrate your
understanding of the chosen elements from Part I.

History of Paris, French
Paris is more than 2000 years old.
250 and 200 BC
Gauls of the Parisian settled there and formed a fishing village on the island.
Paris was known as Lutetia in ancient.

Paris was conquered by Julius Caesar.

Hugh Capet, Count of Paris, became king of France. Capetians established to become the
nation’s capital.
1355-1358
Paris declared themselves as an independent commune under the leadership of Etienne
Marcel.
1789
The storming of the Bastille was the first of a series of key actions by the Parisian during
French Revolution.
1830 and 1848
Paris played major role in the revolution.
1871
Franco-Russian War, the city was besieged for 4 months until France surrendered. French
established the Commune of Paris after the withdrawal of German troops.
20 Century
World War 1-German was prevented from reaching Paris.
World War 2 – German occupied the city from 1940 to 1944.

Book Research
The Three Musketeers Novel
(Dumas, 2008) The Three Musketeers, known as Les Trois Mousquetaires in French,
is a historical novel by Alexander Dumas (1802-1870) . It was written in 1844 and first
published in serial forms in the magazine Le Siècle between March and July 1844. It was
translated into three English versions in 1846.The novel's current publisher is Bantam Books,
New York. This novel was not only turned into a film, it was also published in comics and
games. The story of d'Artagnan is continued by Alexander Dumas Twenty Years After and
The Vicomte of Bragelonne: Ten Years Later. Those three novels by Dumas were together
known as the d'Artagnan Romances.
The novel began in France. A young man who hoped to become a Musketeer,named
D’ Artagnan one day, he sets out from Gascony to Paris with fifteen crowns, a horse and a
letter of introduction to M. de Treville, an important person. His pluck, determination and
good manners lead him to become friends with the three Musketeers named Porthos, Athos
and Aramis. He fell in love with the beautiful Constance Bonacieux. The Duke of
Buckingham was wooing Queen Anne of France. They could not be together because Queen
Anne was married to King Loius of France. So, Anne gave Duke of Buckingham some
diamond studs.
Cardinal was still angry with Queen Anne because his declaration of love was turned
down by her a few years ago. He wants her to get into trouble with King Louis. He sent a spy
to steal Queen Anne’s diamond studs. The diamonds were actually gifted by the King himself.
So, Cardinal suggested to the King to hold a ball, which required Queen Anne to wear the
diamond pins to the ball.
Contance Bonacieux, the Queen’s maid promised that she will find someone to help
the Queen. D’ Artagnan promised to help Contance in getting back the diamond pins to get
the good grace from Constance. D’ Artagnan manage to find the diamond studs from the
Duke but he found that two of them were missing. Meanwhile, the Duke blocked any ships
from leaving England so that the missing studs would not make it to Paris.

Constance had a date with D’Artagnan, but did not show up. D’Artagnan found out
that Constance was kidnapped. D’Artagnan went to find Porthos, Aramis and Athos. Athos
told D’Artagnan that a friend of his was a nobleman and years ago he married a beautiful
woman but finally discovered that she was a branded criminal.
Athos, Porthos and Aramis eavesdrop on a conversation between Cardinal and
Milady. They found out that Milady was going to persuade someone to assassinate the Duke
of Buckhingham. She also wants the death of D’Artagnan. Athos, Porthos and Aramis sent
lackey to Tours by warning the Queen of the plot against Buckingham and send another
lackey to England to warn Milady’s brother-in-law about her arrival.
When Milady arrives in England, she manages to persuade John Felton, her jailer to
set her free. She then stabs the Duke to death. Milady then sailed to a convent where
Constance was hiding. D’Artagnan was overjoyed when the Queen allowed him to take
Constance away from the convent. However, when he arrived, Milady had poisoned
Constance. Constance dies in D’Artagnan’s arms. The Musketeers track Milady down and
brought her to trial. She was executed.
The Cardinal requested to see D’Artagnan. He told Cardinal that Milady is dead.
Cardinal offers D’Artagnan a commission as a lieutenant in the Musketeers, D’Artagnan
protested that the other Musketeers should also be granted with the position as well. But they
all refused.

Movie Research
The Three Musketeers (2011 Film)
In Venice, the Three Musketeers Athos (Matthew Macfadyen), Porthos (Ray
Stevenson) and Aramis (Luke Evans), with the help of Athos' lover, Milady de Winter (Milla
Jovovich), stole the airship blueprints made by Leonardo da Vinci. However, they were
betrayed by Milady, who gave the blueprints to the Duke of Buckingham (Orlando Bloom).
Upon returning to France, the Musketeers were forced to be disbanded by Cardinal Richelieu
(Christoph Waltz) due to their failure.
One year later, the young D'Artagnan (Logan Lerman) leaves Gascony for Paris in
hopes of becoming a Musketeer, like his father once was, only to learn that they no longer
exist. D'Artagnan ends up challenging Captain Rochefort (Mads Mikkelsen), the leader of
Richelieu's guard, to a duel after being offended by him, but Rochefort tried to shoot him. In
an attempt to get revenge, D'Artagnan offends Athos, Porthos and Aramis for petty reasons.
He scheduled duels with each of them, on the same day and the same place, but at different
times, not knowing who they were.
Before they could duel, D'Artagnan and the Musketeers were attacked by the guards
for breaking the law by having a public duel. They fought the soldiers off. At this point,
D'Artagnan discovered their true identities. However, four of them ended up being captured
and brought before the young King Louis XIII (Freddie Fox) and his wife, Queen Anne (Juno
Temple). Richelieu attempts to convince them to execute the four prisoners, but the king
impressed and congratulated them instead, much to Richelieu's fury.
Later, Richelieu meets Milady, who is actually working for him. He orders her to
plant false love letters among Queen Anne's possessions and steal Queen Anne's diamond
necklace. She was to hide it in the Tower of London with the objective of framing Queen
Anne of having an affair with the Duke of Buckingham, who is in France. The affair would
force King Louis to execute Queen Anne and declare war on England. At this point, the

people would demand a more experienced leader for the country, Richelieu himself. Before
leaving, Milady demands that Richelieu gives her an authorization declaring that she was
working on behalf of France's best interests.
However, Queen Anne's lady-in-waiting Constance Bonacieux (Gabriella Wilde)
discovers his plan and pleads with the Musketeers to stop Richelieu. They followed Milady
and Buckingham to London, while Constance was kidnapped by Rochefort for helping the
Musketeers to escape. Meanwhile, King Louis finds the false letters and is advised by
Richelieu to set up a ball in which Queen Anne would be forced to wear the necklace. If she
doesn't, then her affair was real, and there would be a war.
In London, Milady warns Buckingham of the Musketeers arrival, claiming that they
want revenge for being outsmarted by Buckingham one year prior. Buckingham captures
D'Artagnan and prepares to interrogate him. D'Artagnan reveals that he was acting as a decoy
to allow the Musketeers to steal Buckingham's airship. The other musketeers managed to
rescue D'Artagnan and captured Milady, who gives them the authorization in an attempt to
have her life spared. Upon realizing she failed, she jumps out of the airship into the English
Channel.
The Musketeers recovered the necklace and returned to Paris, only to be attacked by
Rochefort, piloting an airship secretly built by Richelieu. Rochefort feigns an attempt to
exchange Constance for the necklace in order to capture D'Artagnan, but the Musketeers
came to his rescue and the two ships crash in the Notre Dame Cathedral, where D'Artagnan
fights and defeats Rochefort, rescuing Constance, who returns the necklace to Queen Anne.
The Musketeers arrived at the ball. For the sake of King Louis' and his people, they
lied by saying that Rochefort was trying to sabotage an airship that Richelieu built for them,
for the purpose of identifying a traitor. To convince King Louis, Athos presents Milady's
authorization, which King Louis accepts. Satisfied, Richilieu offers the Musketeers a place in
his army. However they refused, which infuriates Richelieu, who swears revenge.
Meanwhile, at sea, Milady is rescued by Buckingham, who reveals that he intends to
avenge her and destroy the Musketeers. It is revealed that Buckingham is advancing towards
France with a massive fleet of airships and sea-faring ships.

Characters Research
D’Artagnan
The central character of the novel, d'Artagnan is a young, intelligent Gascon and a poor guy
who comes to join the Musketeers to make his fortune in Paris. He is brave, noble, ambitious,
crafty, and intelligent. Like any Romantic hero, he is driven by love and ruled by chivalry,
but occasionally falls into immoral behavior. Athos, Porthos, & Aramis became
D’Artagnan’s closest friends and shared his adventures, successes and failures.
Athos
The most important of the Three Musketeers, Athos is like a father figure to d'Artagnan. He
is the oldest among the four. Athos is distinguished in every way—intelligence, handsome,
secretive, brave, has good swordsmanship. Yet he is tortured by depression, which no one
knows. In the end of the novel, it reveals that he is the Comte de la Fere, who was Milady's
husband before she married Baron de Winter.
Aramis
One of the younger and great musketeer among the three musketeers. He is a handsome and
quiet person. He always protests that he is only temporarily working as a Musketeer. Aramis
has a mysterious mistress, Madame de Chevreuse, a high noblewoman, whose existence and
identity is kept a secret from his friends. The reason he became a musketeer was because of a
woman and his arrogance: as a young man he wished to become an abbey, he had the
misfortune to be caught and thrown out of a house, while (innocently or not) reading to a
young woman. He practiced fencing everyday and follows the best swordsman in town.
Porthos
He is loud, hot-tempered, and self-important. He is extremely vain, and enjoys outfitting
himself handsomely; Even so, he is a good fighter and a braver friend. He carries a sword that
Aramis nicknamed Balizarde. He enjoys wine, women and songs. Apart from that, he is also
a loyal person. His eating abilities impressed King Louis XIV. This indicates that he really
really is a big eater.
Milady
Milady is a mysterious, dangerous, beautiful and evil woman, who works for Cardinal. Her
real name is Sabine, she is also known as Lady de Winter. At the end of the story, she and
the musketeers became fierce adversaries. D'Artagnan was obsessed with her, but eventually
they became fierce adversaries. Her left wrist is branded with the Fleur-de-Lis, which is a
mark that is normally branded on the worst criminals. This mark is kept a secret from
everyone. Therefore, Milady is willing to kill anyone that finds out about this secret.

King Louis XIII
King Louis is the King of France. The King does not do much for the country, but the
minister do most of them instead. And this makes the minister, Cardinal Richelieu a very
powerful man in France.
Cardinal Richelieu
Cardinal Richelieu is the most powerful and important man in France. He has the great
influence on the king. Cardinal Richelieu’s mission is to maintain the reputation and power
of the King.
Queen Anne
Queen Anne is the Queen of France. Her full name is Anne of Austria. She is Spanish. Anne
loves the Duke of Buckingham. This causes the King and minister to be suspicious of her
loyalty to the king and the country. The King does not trust her or even like her, while the
Cardinal hates her. She lives an unhappy life.
Constance Bonacieux
Constance is the Queen's seamstress and confidante. She is very loyal to the Queen. D’
Artagnan falls in love with her after rescuing her from the Cardinal’s guard. Because
Artagnan is in love with her, he gets involve in the Queen’s secret affair by getting back the
12 diamond pins for Queen Anne.

Social Context
The story portrays individuals of positive and negative characters pursuing socially
accepted goals and expressing higher values in pursuit of those goals. The goals are limited to
maintain the prestige of the Queen, honour in the face of challenges to ones bravery
(D'Artangan), personal power (Richilieu), wealth and status (Porthos). The goals are not
idealistic, beyond the scope of being true to the social values of the day like courage, loyalty
to one's master. Doing what is right or good in its own spiritual sense is not a motive. The
story describes commitment to high values in the limited social context--goodness, loyalty,
friendship and generosity
The progress of the society expresses through the personal motives and aspiration of
the individuals. Social evolution takes place through development of individual ego. None,
except perhaps Richilieu, consciously seeks the evolution of the society. The Queen seeks to
fortify her position, Buckingham seeks power and romance, Louis XIII tries to maintain the
facade of kingship, the musketeers seek to fulfill the dharma of soldiers.
The story takes place at a time when absolute monarchy is developing as a mean to
create a unified, national identity. In seeking to strengthen the monarchy against the divisive,
fragmenting force of feudalis, Richilieu serves the development of national consciousness
and unification of France through the instrumentation of his personal ambitions for power.
Athos espouses commitment to the principle of monarchy. Others act only for personal
motives.
The monarchs (Louis, Anne) act purely out of personal pride and ambition and
prestige, with no thought for the good of the country. In their minds, they 'are' the country.
Everyone was expected to serve and sub serves the self-importance, prestige power and
privilege of the monarch. Today every person seeks those things for himself or herself.

A historical heritage mansion, the Carcosa Seri Negara claims a hilltop setting among more
than 16 hectares of garden and lawns in the heart of Kuala Lumpur city, Malaysia. The
history of Carcosa Seri Negara is integral to the development and history of Malaysia.
It is owned by the Malaysian Government. The hotel includes two colonial mansions, one
name Carcosa while the other, Seri Negara.
Carcosa
The Carcosa mansion was built in 1896-1897 as the official residence of Ang W.H the
first British High Commissioners in Malaya of the then Resident-General of the Federated
Malay States. It was designed by Arthur Charles Norman a senior government architect of the
Public Works Department in Malaya, at a cost of about $25,000. With the eclectic fusion
of Neo-Gothic and Tudor Revival styles, the residence has more than eight bedrooms
including master bedroom and guest rooms; and eleven bathrooms.
It became a hotel in 1989.

Seri Negara
Seri Negara (Malay) or Beautiful Country was originally known as the Governor's Residence.
It was opened in 1913 as the official guest house for the Governor of the Straits Settlement. It
was later known as the King's House.
King's House was vacated by the British High Commissioner on August 31, 1957.it was
returned to the Malayan Government. Later then, it was opened as the Istana Tetamu or
Guest's Palace, hosting many visiting dignitary. In 1989, the place was turned into a luxury
hotel. The name was changed to Seri Negara.

Script
Cardinal is seen talking to Milady about his plans
Cardinal: Milady, do you know why I have summoned you to Paris?
Milady: No, your eminence.
Cardinal: Have you ever notice how the Queen looks at the Duke of Buckingham?
Milady: No, my lord. Forgive me if I’m wrong milord, I am to prove whether your
assumptions are right, I presume.
Cardinal: Ah Mon Cherié, you are wrong. I do not presume, I have seen the evidence with my
own eyes.
Milady looks shocked and gasped lightly.
Milady: The French Queen Anne having an affair with the Duke? This can change everything.
(reciting to herself)
Cardinal: The crown will finally be mine if we play this right.
Milady: What are your command my lord? I will remain as your loyal servant till I die.
Cardinal: Very good. Serve well,Lady de Winter, make no mistake that you will be heavily
rewarded.
Milady: Yes, Milord.
In the Palace
Cardinal went over unhurriedly to greet the king to activate his plans. Cardinal bows to
the king and addresses him.
Cardinal: Your Majesty, the preparations for your birthday banquet had been done.
King Louis XIII: Good. Do you have any more that you wish to report?
Cardinal: Your Majesty, you have lost your father at a very young age. I am always here
when you are to seek guidance. That is, if your Majesty don’t mind.
King Louis XIII looks over at the Cardinal and wonders what he is up to.
King Louis XIII: What are you trying to say, my eminence?
Cardinal: Forgive me, if I may be so bold, I do not wish to see you hurt, your Majesty. Or let
the people look down on you.
King Louis XIII looked outraged.

King Louis XIII: Know that you’re walking on eggshells here Cardinal. Get to the point.
Cardinal: Forgive me, if I’m wrong, your Majesty but I have noticed the unusual attention
Queen Anne has been giving to the Duke of Buckingham.
King Louis XIII: Are you suggesting that my wife is having an affair with the Duke, Cardinal?
Cardinal: I have evidence that Queen Anne is having an affair with the Duke, your Majesty.
King Louis XIII: This is an outrage, how dare you accuse Anne is having an affair.
Cardinal: But your Majesty, the truth lies in front of you. Let me prove to you.
King Louis XIII was shocked at the accusations made, however he chose to believe his
wife, Queen Anne wouldn’t cheat on him with his enemy, England. She was the lovely
wife that he was madly in love with. He refused to give in to the Cardinal but the
Cardinal simply does not commit grave accusations like that without prove.
King Louis XIII: Then prove it to me. Make no mistake; if you fail to prove it, you’ll be
severely punished.
Cardinal: Yes, your Majesty.
The cardinal smiled to himself evilly. Queen Anne would die a horrific death when his
plans succeed and the foolish boy will be properly dethroned.
Later that night
Queen Anne, Constance & the Cardinal are here.
Constance is combing the Queen’s hair when the Cardinal entered the room.
Anne was shocked to find that the Cardinal had entered her room at such a late time
but managed to conceal her shockness.
Cardinal enters and bows to the Queen at the entrance.
Queen Anne: Cardinal, were you perhaps looking for my husband?
Cardinal: No, my Queen. I was looking for you.
Queen Anne: At this late night, Cardinal?
Cardinal looks at Constance, throwing glares at her hinting for her to leave the room.
Constance was doing a fine job at glaring at him too. She never did like that snake of a
man.
Queen Anne: Constance.
Constance: I shall be right outside milady.

Constance was afraid to leave her Queen behind as she did not trust the Cardinal to be
left alone with her Queen. Constance shuts the door lightly and the Queen looked up at
the Cardinal with calm.
Queen Anne: Now why are you here, Cardinal?
Cardinal: His Majesty had a secret order for me to deliver to your Majesty.
Queen Anne: And my husband who shares the same bed with me could not tell me this
himself?
Cardinal: I just follow orders, Ma’am.
Queen Anne: Very well.
Cardinal: Your Majesty is required to wear the 12 diamond pins that his Majesty gifted to
your Majesty on the night of the birthday banquet.
Anne recalls back that she had gifted the diamond pins to the Duke, her lover and he
would be leaving tonight to England.
Queen Anne: Is that all, Cardinal? If it is, you are dismissed.
Cardinal bows out gracefully and exits. Constance immediately came in after the
Cardinal had left.
Constance: My lady, are you alright, you seem rather pale.
Queen Anne: I fear that my life will be over soon.
Constance:What are you talking about my lady?
Queen Anne: The King had the Cardinal to send me an order. Wear the pins on his birthday
banquet. She whispered. He knows
Constance: I am not too sure about that, my lady. If his Majesty does know he would be here
instead of the Cardinal.
Queen Anne: I do not know and the Duke is leaving for England tonight. Oh Constance, what
are we going to do?
Constance thinks for a while and an idea came into her head.
Constance: My queen, are you willing to trust the Musketeers?
Queen Anne looks at Constance.
Queen Anne: What are you suggesting, Constance?
Constance: We can get the pins back from the Duke.

Constance approaches musketeers.
Constance: The Queen needs your help Musketeers.
The Musketeers looked over at Constance with interest.
Athos: What does her majesty needs?
D’ Artagnan was looking at Constance longingly. Constance notices but ignores.
Constance: A ship have left for England last night. The Duke of Buckingham is on it with
Queen Anne’s 12 diamond pins. Get it back for the Queen before she is accused of treason by
the Cardinal on the King’s birthday banquet.
Athos looks at Aramis and Porthos and gave a look.
Aramis: Then we leave now.
They got up from their seats and went to grab their muskets.
Constance: Wait, there is more. No one is allowed to know that you went after the Duke. The
Cardinal’s men will be after you so be warned and be back in 4 days.
The trio had left the tavern leaving D’Artagnan who’s attention is still on Constance.
Constance: D’ Artagnan, are you not going with them?
Comes in a yell for D’Artagnan.
Aramis: Are you not coming, boy?
Porthos: That boy is as love sick as he gets.
Constance looks at D’Artagnan who’s grabbing his muskets now.
Constance: Be safe.
D’ Artagnan exits.
Back in the palace.
Constance: My lady, the musketeers had left for England.
Queen Anne: Now we wait, and hopefully they succeed.
At the party
Queen Anne does not wear the any pins as the Musketeers are not back yet and she
dreads the party.
Cardinal: Your Majesty, you look beautiful today.

Queen Anne: Thank you, Cardinal.
Cardinal: Forgive my intrusion, your Majesty. I don’t see the pins as ordered by the King.
Queen Anne laughs nervously and exclaimed.
Queen Anne: I knew I was forgetting something.
Anne looks at Constance and said to her.
Anne: My dear Constance had forgotten to remind me the pins.
The Cardinal doesn’t fall for Anne’s little show and smiled apologetically as if he just
accused her of eating a small cat.
Cardinal: Ah I see, excuse me, your Majesty but I will see you in the party.
Cardinal exits.
Constance: I will see whether the Musketeers have returned. Do not worry too much, milady.
Come what may.
Queen Anne grabs Constance’s hands and squeezed lightly.
Queen Anne: Thank you.
Constance is seen fidgeting at a secluded area. She worries whether the musketeers can
actually make it, if they don’t, war will break out between England and France, not to
mention her mistress will loose her life and be a disgrace to Austria.
D’Artagnan arrives panting. With minor cuts across his face.
Constance rushes over.
Constance: You’re hurt D’ Artagnan. Where are the other 3 musketeers? Are they okay?
D’ Artagnan: They are fine, ma’am. Take the pins here, get it safely to the Queen now.
Constance: Thank you so much.
Constance exits.
Meanwhile
Cardinal smiles to himself as he opens his palm to show the 2 diamond pins. (Milady
was seen giving the two pins to the cardinal before the meeting with Queen Anne)
Back to the present

Constance: My lady, here are the pins. I’ll pin them for you.
Queen Anne looked overjoy when she saw Constance with the diamond box.
Constance whispers to the Anne and told her.
Constance: The duke had made 2 fake diamonds made, as a spy had intruded and stolen them
before it was too late.
Anne: Ah I see
Anne opens to box to see whether the difference between the diamonds was noticeable
and to her surprise it looks completely identical.
Constance and Anne sighed in relief.
Anne: The duke is indeed a smart man.
The Cardinal’s plans had failed.
The next week in an Inn
Cardinal: I want you to go to England and tell the Duke of Buckingham to support the
Huguenots or I will disclose to the word that the lovely French Queen is having an affair with
him.
Milady: I want something in return.
Cardinal: And what is it, lady de winter?
Milady: Constance and D’Artagnan dies.
Cardinal: Consider it done. If the Duke refuses, kill him.
Athos is seen overhearing the whole plot.
In the inn, Athos is seen trying to tell is friends about the plot he had overheard.
Porthos: You need to lighten up Athos.
Aramis: Yeah, have fun with us. Have some beer.
Porthos: Look at D’Artagnan laughing with the ladies.
Athos: I am trying to tell you something he glances around the room
Athos drags all of the 3 out. Pissed at them for acting so stupidly when war is about to
breakout.
Athos tells him of the plan they’ve heard.
(scene)

They rush off to England and managed to find Milady when she was in an inn. They
ambushed her and tied her up.
All 4 of them looks at the tied up Milady. Athos of those in pain, hurt and despair.
Milady refused to look at D’Artagnan or Athos.
Athos was the first to break the silence.
Athos: Sabine(Milady’s real name), give up the plan and to never return and we’ll let you go.
Only D’Artargnan was blur as he did not know who Milady truly was. The other two
just looked sympathetic.
Milady refused to look at Athos and answered
Milady: No. I rather you kill me.
Athos: You know I can’t do that after finding out you’re alive.
Milady: Then leave me be.
D’Artganan: And give you a chance to start a war between two powerful nations? No way.
The other two hushed D’Artagnan and he kept quiet.
Milady: Know when to give up, musketeers. The cardinal will win and he will rule over
France.
Athos: There’s really no other way now isn’t it?
Milady: You have chosen the road for me when you wouldn’t believe the truth.
Athos: I am truly sorry for what I did, Sabine. I hope you will forgive me someday but you
still have to pay for your crimes.
Milady: So be it. Know that I will never forgive you, Athos.
Athos turned his head around and a tear had escaped.
Athos: You know what to do, boys.
Athos exits and the screen blacks out.
