- 3. In a departure from the past, the 2013 conference is co-sponsored by the State of Rhode Island Department of Health. We invite EDRA44 participants to contribute to developing health policy through environmental design research in addition to the general issues addressed at EDRA conferences. As a state where the most remote location is no more than 50 minutes from the capital, it is an ideal place to test new policies and measure outcomes. edra44PROVIDENCE
- 4. While we typically think of a “caregiver” in terms of a healthcare provider, it is also the architect's responsibility to provide “care” to promote recuperation. Environments can support caregivers’ activities at every step of the process, greatly expanding their power to heal. Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence is just such a hospital designed not only by architects, but with participation of doctors, pediatric nurses and support staff—and by the community. It is a child friendly place, and a place of healing as demonstrated by several follow up studies after it was occupied. edra44PROVIDENCE
- 5. However, promoting population health through environmental design is a lot more effective than healing. Bus and bicycles are key at the intersection of health and transportation. edra44PROVIDENCE
- 6. Rhode Island is a national leader in providing bike paths to its residents and visitors, with 50 miles of paved bike paths and over 40 miles under design. You can visit RWU with your bike. edra44PROVIDENCE
- 7. The Brown University’s Public Health Program and Center for Environmental Studies have faculty that can become important contributors to EDRA44 edra44PROVIDENCE
- 8. In addition to Brown, RISD recently hosted an extraordinary conference “making it better” that focused on the role of art and architecture in helping deliver better healthcare. edra44PROVIDENCE
- 9. Providence is a small city of 150,000 and, in act of urban healing, had a highway that was bisecting it removed and a river that was covered under asphalt brought to the surface. edra44PROVIDENCE

- 28. and if you bring your little ones, one of the greatest children’s museums in the country is a 15 minute walk from the conference hotel. edra44PROVIDENCE
- 29. Providence is a place of great people possibly because of the great architecture as many of you labor to prove. On the foreground you see Roger Williams, who was exiled by the Massachusetts Puritans and founded tiny Rhode Island as the fist place in human history to experience religious freedom. edra44PROVIDENCE
