in him should not perish, but have everlasting
life.

1. Lutheran – Branches out of it: Evangelical Lutheran.
2. Anglican (Church of England) – Congregational,
Episcopal, Methodism.
Out of Methodism: United Methodists, Wesleyan,
Holiness, Pentecostal, Charismatic, Non-denominational.
3. Protestantism - Reformed Churches, Presbyterian,
Church of Scotland.
1. Baptism.
a) Some still practice pedo-baptism while most do not.
b) Some allow sprinkling, pouring, or immersion as
methods of baptism.
c) These practices can vary from church to church.
2. Calvinism vs. Arminianism
a) The teachings of John Calvin
-Calvinism or Reformed Theology
-(TULIP Theology).
b) The teachings of Jacob Arminius – Armenism.
Calvinism Arminianism
1. Total Depravity or Total Inability. 1. Free Will or Human
Ability.
2. Unconditional Election. 2. Conditional Election.
3. Limited Atonement. 3. General Atonement.
4. Irresistible Grace. 4. Grace Resisted.
5. Perseverance of the Saints. 5. Uncertainty of
Perseverance.
I. The five points of Arminianism,
explained, and supported with
Scripture
1. Unrestricted Free Will or Human Free Will
This states that though man is fallen, he is not
incapacitated by the sinful nature and can freely
choose God. His will is not restricted and enslaved
by his sinful nature.
Joshua 24:15
And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord,
choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether
the gods which your fathers served that were on
the other side of the flood, or the gods of the
Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me
and my house, we will serve the Lord.
John 3:16
For God so loved the world that He gave His
only begotten Son, that whoever believeth in
Him should not perish but have everlasting
life.
2. Conditional Election
God chose people for salvation based on His
foreknowledge. God looked into the future from
eternity past, to see who would respond to the
Gospel message.
Jeremiah 1:5
Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee;
and before thou camest forth out of the womb
I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet
unto the nations.
Romans 8:29
For whom He did foreknow, He also did
predestinate to be conformed to the image of
his Son, that he might be the firstborn among
many brethren.
3. Universal Atonement
The position that Jesus bore the sin of everyone
who ever lived.
John 1:29
The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto
him, and saith, Behold The Lamb of God
which taketh away the sin of the world.
1 John 2:2
And He is the propitiation for our sins: and not
for ours only, but also for the sin of the whole
world.
4. Resistable Grace
The teaching that the grace of God can be resisted
and finally quenched, so as to reject salvation in
Christ.
Hebrews 3:15
while it is said: To day, if ye will hear his voice,
harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
1 Thessalonians 5:19
Quench not the Spirit.
5. Potential to Fall from Grace
The teaching that a person can fall from grace and
lose his salvation, even after he has been ‘born
again’, or, regenerated.
Galatians 5:4
Christ is become of no effect unto you,
whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye
are fallen from grace.
Hebrews 6:4-6 For it is impossible for those who
were once enlightened, and have tasted of the
heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy
Ghost, 5 And have tasted the good word of
God, and the powers of the world to come, 6 If
they shall fall away, to renew them again to
repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the
Son of God afresh, and put Him to an open shame.
II. The five points of Calvinism
T - Total Depravity
The belief in total depravity takes the view that
sinfulness pervades all areas of life and human
existence. Through the Fall of Man, humanity is
stained by sin in every aspect:
heart, emotions, will, mind, and body.
This means people cannot independently choose
God.
Mark 7:21-23
For from within, out of the heart of men,
proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications,
murders, 22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness,
deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy,
pride, foolishness: 23 All these evil things come
from within, and defile the man.
1 Corinthians 2:14
But the natural man receiveth not the things of
the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto
him: neither can he know them, because they
are spiritually discerned
U - Unconditional Election
This Calvinist view says God chooses who will be
saved. Because people are dead in their sins, they
are unable to initiate a response to God. In eternity
past God elected certain people to be saved.
The saved people are called the Elect.
L - Limited Atonement
Limited atonement is the view that Jesus
Christ died only for the sins of the Elect.
