Elements of the Editing Process
 Jerome Eberle utilized his bachelor’s degree in English
through his work as a publishing assistant for Booklist
Magazine, a publication of the American Library
Association in Chicago. One of Jerome Eberle's
responsibilities in that position was editing reviews for
the magazine.
The editing process always involves copyediting, or
checking the writer's manuscript for correctness in
formatting, punctuation, grammar, capitalization,
and spelling. A style guide assists the editor in
copyediting material and provides a detailed set of
guidelines which help to promote consistency
throughout the content.
 The handbook of choice for most professionals is the
Chicago Manual of Style. Copyeditors strive to
eliminate passive voice, ambiguity, and wordiness in
order to streamline content. Another essential
element of the copyediting process is fact-checking.
Any dates or statistics should be double-checked.
In addition to copyediting, an editor may also have
to rewrite or rearrange the paragraphs of a
manuscript to maintain a logical flow. This kind of
editing work is called substantive or line editing.
Proofreading, yet another part of the review process,
entails checking copyedited pages against a typeset
page or electronic content to ensure that edits are
implemented correctly.
