- 2. LITERATURE REVIEW Of the 21-million disabled population of the country 12 million are children. So the trained special educators and their commitment to this profession is very important. The country has around 3200 registered special schools. Special teaching has been traditionally viewed as a high-stressed occupation.
- 3. Special schools for children with special needs spread the idea of “Education for All and equal Opportunities of Education”. Special teachers experience stress due to the heavy work load, the behavior of the pupil, class size or overcrowding, structure of the school, lack of promotion prospects, unsatisfactory working conditions, ambiguity of the teacher’s role, and job insecurity .
- 4. Though the special education teachers enjoy the challenge of working with students with disabilities, the work also can be emotionally and physically draining. Many special education teachers are under considerable stress due to heavy workloads and administrative tasks.
- 5. The physical and emotional demands of the job especially handling children with multiple disability cause some special education teachers to leave the occupation.
- 6. OBJECTIVE To study the occupational stress and the job satisfaction among special educators.
- 7. RESEARCH DESIGN Special educators in Ernakulam district are taken as the universe of the study. Eight special schools are selected using Lottery method and 60 respondents from the schools were selected by applying systematic random sampling.
- 8. FINDINGS From this study it is evident that 64 % of the respondents have low job satisfaction because of Low salary Job insecurity Monotonous This study reveals that 36% of the respondents experiences occupational stress.
