An emulsion is a biphasic liquid dosage form containing two immiscible liquids, one dispersed in the other. Scarlet red dye is used to identify the type of emulsion. In a conductivity test, if the bulb glows upon passing electric current, the emulsion is an oil-in-water (O/W) type. If the emulsion breaks upon dilution with water, it is a water-in-oil (W/O) type. For volatile oil emulsions, the typical ratio of oil to water to gum is 2:2:1. Emulsions are thermodynamically unstable but phase inversion and cracking can be minimized by proper storage, concentration of the disperse phase, and use of emuls
