- 3. purpose: To stimulate defecation. To induce peristalsis. To destroy worms which are present in the intestine. To protect and soothe the mucous membrane of the intestine. To relieve gaseous distension. To promote regular bowel movement. To soften the hard faecal matter. To administer the mediactions. To induce sedation.
